State Level Inter EMRS Cultural & Literary Fest 2025 concludes
Sept. 20, Pakyong: The two days state level inter EMRS Cultural and Literary Fest 2025 concluded at the premises of Tribal Research Institute & Training Centre, Assam Lingzey, Pakyong. The Inter EMRS Festival had the presence of four EMRS schools, namely; EMRS Gangyap, SMRS Swayem, EMRS Parakha and EMRS Suntoley. The two days culture and literary festival had on the first day literary events including Elocution, Extempore, Spell Bee, Debate, Kavya Path, Recitation, Quiz, Tribal Painting, Creative Writing, Traditional Story Telling and Story Telling.
The second day had events related to cultural activities including Cultural devotional group song, tribal solo song, instrumental music, group dance, group dance (Tamang selo) musical competitions by teachers and 2 D Visual Art.
The first day had Shri. Suman Gurung, Special Secretary, Social Welfare Department wishing the students the best for the two days performance.
Speaking on the valedictory function of the two days fest, Smt. Sarika Pradhan, Secretary, Social Welfare Department cm Chairman, EMRS Society of Sikkim and also the Chief Guest of the program congratulated all the students for their exceptional performance and urged them to strive towards excellence. She emphasized on the aspect of competitions and opined that winning and losing is a part of the cycle, but one should never be discouraged by losing or attain arrogance if they win. She urged them to study well and wished all the teams who secured first positions to do practice well for the national level competition.
The valedictory function had as Guests of Honor, Shri. Thinley Chankapa, Chief Engineer, Social Welfare Department and Shri Satyen Pradhan, Special Secretary, Social Welfare Department. The concluding day also had Smt. Bandana Chettri, Additional Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Shri. Subodh Kumar Pokhrel, Joint Secretary (Admin), Social Welfare Department, Shri. Ram Tamang, Deputy Director, Social Welfare Department as Special Guests.
The vote of thanks for the program was addressed by Shri. Prem Kamal Rai, Joint Secretary, Social Welfare Department.

District level Intercollege Disaster Risk Reduction quiz concludes in Pakyong District



Pakyong: The district level finals of the State Level intercollege quiz competition “Disaster Risk Reduction 2024” organized by Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Government of Sikkim concluded for the three districts of Mangan, Gangtok and Pakyong at Government College, Rhenock yesterday.

13 colleges and universities from across the three districts participated in the quiz competition. The competition had written prelims and a stage round for the finalists. Six colleges, post the written round were able to participate in the stage finals of the competition. Three colleges, namely, Harkamaya College of Education, Sikkim Government College, Rhenock and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences gained their spot in the grand finale of the quiz scheduled to take place at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok on the 16th of September 2025.

The Chief Guest of the day was Smt. Prabha Pradhan Chettri, Upadhyaksha, Pakyong District who appreciated the efforts put by the Department to reach out to colleges and engage the students on Disaster Management awareness in the most interesting of ways. She also lauded the efforts of the colleges for their participation and urged everyone to be a part of doing their bit in preparedness and make other also aware on the roles and responsibilities of youngsters.

The program also had Shri. GL Meena, IAS, ADC, Pakyong district speaking to students on the aspects of disaster preparedness and motivated them to do their bit in terms of disaster preparedness. Speaking on the objective of “Disaster Risk Reduction Quiz 2025” Ms. Parina Gurung, Additional Secretary, Land Revenue and Disaster Management spoke on the objective of the department to focus on creating pre disaster awareness so that youngsters know about how to take care of themselves while and if any situation arises.

The program was attended by several dignitaries of Pakyong district including Shri. Santosh Pradhan, OSD, Sikkim State Lotteries, Shri. Boom Tshering Yonzon, OSD, IT Department, Shri. DB Chettri, OSD to Hon’ble MLA, Rhenock Constituency.

Six colleges from six districts will participate in the state level finals of the Disaster Risk Reduction Quiz scheduled to be held at Chintan Bhawan on the 16th of September 2025.

District Level Inter-College Quiz Competition held at Soreng District
Soreng, Chakung, September 9 (IPR): A District-level Inter-College Quiz Competition was held today at Government Science College, Chakung. The event was organised by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, Land Revenue & Disaster Management Department, in commemoration of State Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Day, observed every year on September 18.
The competition created a stimulating and inquisitive atmosphere, with active participation from 10 colleges across Namchi, Soreng, and Gyalshing districts. Six colleges advanced to the semi-finals, out of which three teams emerged as winners. These colleges will now represent their districts in the upcoming State-Level Finale at Gangtok on September 18. The event not only showcased the participants knowledge and preparedness but also reflected their determination and awareness in the field of disaster management.
The programme began with the Additional Director (SSDMA) Mr Rajiv Roka welcoming the chief guest, Advisor (IPR) Mr SB S***a, along with other dignitaries, through the traditional offering of khadas and mementos. Thereby followed by the ceremonial lamp lighting and the college anthem.
In his address, Advisor (IPR) Mr SB S***a stressed the importance of the District Disaster Management Authority and the Quick Response Team (QRT). He highlighted the challenges faced during the monsoon season and underlined the importance of community cooperation in disaster management. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the public during calamities while urging precautionary measures. He called upon the Roads and Bridges Department to maintain drainage systems, and the Power and Forest Departments to mitigate risks caused by falling trees and potential electrocution hazards.
Additional Director (SSDMA) Mr Rajiv Roka further emphasised the importance of DRR Day, citing Sikkim’s vulnerability to disasters. He highlighted the need to shift focus from relief-centric efforts to preparedness, mitigation, and prevention. Quoting United Nations Development Programme (UNDP’s) evaluation, he shared that disaster rates are projected to rise by 30% worldwide in the next two decades. He also reminded the gathering that DRR Day commemorates the lives lost in the devastating earthquake of September 18, 2011, while underlining the importance of implementing stronger disaster readiness measures.
Earlier, Quiz Master Mr Diwakar Basnet briefed the participants on the event format and stressed how such initiatives help spread disaster awareness and provide a platform for learning. Students also presented their contributions to disaster risk reduction through their college activities and shared reflections on the significance of the event.

Hazardous waste, encompassing solids, liquids, sludges, and gases, is generated daily by various industries, laboratories, hospitals, households, and agricultural operations. These materials possess hazardous traits, including toxicity, reactivity, corrosiveness, ignitability, infectivity, or radioactivity, which can lead to mismanagement that is harmful to both humans and the environment.
Controlling hazardous waste starts with proper identification and segregation, ensuring that incompatible materials (like acids and bases) are stored separately in clearly labeled, durable containers with secure, well-ventilated storage. It’s crucial to train employees on safe handling protocols - using appropriate PPE, emergency procedures, and maintaining detailed documentation and records of waste generation, transport, and disposal. Moreover, prioritizing waste minimization through process improvements or substituting less hazardous materials aligns with the waste management hierarchy - reduce, reuse, treat, then dispose. Finally, ensure safe disposal by partnering with licensed transporters and treatment facilities, and adhering to regulatory requirements for hazardous waste handling.

The Grand Finale of The Consumer Quiz 2025 held at Namchi District.
Namchi, August 30 (IPR): The State Level Inter-College Quiz Competition 2025, along with a consumer awareness programme, was organised today at Town Hall, Namchi.
The programme was organised by Legal Metrology Unit & Consumer Protection Cell, Food & Civil Supplies Department, Government of Sikkim.
The programme was graced by MLA- 11 Namchi Singhithang, Mr Satish Chandra Rai, who served as the Chief Guest.
He expressed his gratitude to the Food & Civil Supplies Department and the Legal Metrology Unit & Consumer Protection Cell for organising an informative programme for the youth. He stated that every individual is a consumer, as one purchases, uses, or benefits from goods and services.
He further urged everyone to check the manufacturing and expiry dates, and to always ask for a receipt while buying or availing of any goods and services, as it is the responsibility of every consumer.
Highlighting the importance of consumer rights, he advised the gathering to remain aware and informed, as every individual holds valid rights as a consumer.
Lastly, he remarked, “One needs to have the passion to learn new things and the courage to question,” he encouraged everyone to make the best use of the competition and awareness event.
Secretary Food & Civil Supplies Department Mr Anil Raj Rai, briefed the gathering on the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which safeguards the rights of consumers and is applicable across India.
He emphasised that the Act exists to protect consumer rights and it is the responsibility of every individual as a consumer, to be aware of and uphold these rights.
He urged everyone to be mindful of their consumer rights and to ensure fair pricing, also stressed that checking the manufacturing date on products is one of the simplest ways to safeguard health, and reminded that requesting a bill is the rightful claim of every consumer.
Additionally he highlighted a quote: ‘Awake, consumer, awake! Recognize your rights and protect yourself.’
