PRESS RELEASE

World Environment Day 2026 Observed with Plantation and Cleanliness Drive at SGIHNS Sheda

Gangtok, 5 June 2026: On the auspicious occasion of World Environment Day 2026, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of SGIHNS Sheda, in collaboration with Eco Stream, Gangtok, successfully organized a Plantation Drive and Cleanliness Drive to promote environmental awareness and community participation.

The programme commenced with an inaugural session focusing on environmental conservation, contemporary ecological challenges, and sustainable solutions from the perspective of Buddhist philosophy, particularly the doctrine of Interdependent Origination as expounded by Lord Buddha in various sutras.

The event began with a welcome address by Ms. Sunita S***a, a first-year UM student. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of butter lamps by the Chief Guest, the Vice Principal of Sheda, Ven. Ach. Karma Tshering Sherpa, the Special Guest, Dr. Deepesh S***a, Head of the Department of Environmental Science (EVS), Sheda, and the Guest of Honour, Mr. Sonam T. Gyaltsen, CEO of Eco Stream, Gangtok. As a mark of respect and appreciation, the Programme Officer, Acharya Sherap Dorjee Bhutia, felicitated all the distinguished guests with traditional cotton scarves, symbolizing the programme's commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

The ceremony was further enriched by Mangalacharan prayers offered by the students. Dr. Pema Choden Rai, HoD, English Department, SGIHNS Sheda delivered an insightful talk highlighting the relationship between environmental conservation and Buddhist philosophy, emphasizing the importance of ecological responsibility and mindful living. Mr. Sonam T. Gyaltsen stressed the significance of individual contributions to society and reminded participants that meaningful service to the community remains one of the highest forms of human responsibility.

The programme received generous support from Ms. Jomo Yeshe D. Yongda, Secretary, Excise Department, Government of Sikkim, who, through her son, donated Bodhi tree saplings, tomato saplings, indoor plants, orange saplings, and avocado saplings for plantation in and around the SGIHNS Sheda campus. She also kindly sponsored refreshments for all the students participating in the programme.

Following the inaugural session, NSS volunteers, students, faculty members, and representatives of Eco Stream carried out plantation and cleanliness activities in designated areas. After the successful completion of the cleanliness drive, Mr. Sonam T. Gyaltsen generously hosted lunch for all the NSS volunteers at Tashi View Point.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ven. Ongpulla Bhutia, a first-year Acharya student. Thereafter, Acharya Lopen Sherap coordinated a group photograph session in the hostel courtyard before participants proceeded for the field activities.

On this occasion, the entire SGIHNS Sheda community would also like to make a humble appeal to the public regarding environmentally responsible religious practices. While prayer flags are an important expression of devotion, we request everyone to avoid tying polyester or synthetic prayer flags on roadside trees, bridges, and public structures. Such materials often degrade slowly and may indirectly harm plants, animals, and the natural environment. In doing so, we may unintentionally cause suffering rather than accumulate merit.

We therefore encourage devotees to hoist prayer flags in appropriate locations such as hillsides, elevated clean spaces, and designated areas of worship. Wherever possible, biodegradable and natural materials, particularly cotton prayer flags, should be used to minimize environmental impact and uphold the true spirit of compassion and respect for all forms of life.

The SGIHNS Sheda community also appeals to all travellers, pilgrims, tourists, and citizens to refrain from littering during their journeys. During the cleanliness drive, volunteers observed significant amounts of waste scattered along roadsides and public spaces. Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and even small actions such as carrying reusable items and disposing of waste properly can make a meaningful difference.

The celebration of World Environment Day 2026 at SGIHNS Sheda successfully promoted environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and the Buddhist values of compassion, interdependence, and care for all living beings. The institution extends its sincere gratitude to all guests, supporters, volunteers, students, and collaborators whose contributions made the programme a great success.

Students’ Ongoing Journey in Traditional Thangka Painting

The students of the Sikkim Government Institute of Higher Nyingma Studies (SGIHNS) Sheda, Taktse, Pangthang, are actively engaged in a three-month Traditional Thangka Painting Training Programme organized under the RAMP Scheme of the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. Through dedicated participation, the 30 selected trainees are learning the sacred art of Thangka painting, gaining both technical skills and an appreciation of its rich spiritual and cultural significance.

Rooted in the tradition of བཟོ་རིག་པ་ Zorigpa (the science of art and craftsmanship), the training reflects SGIHNS Sheda’s commitment to preserving the living heritage of the Five Great Sciences. The students’ enthusiasm and perseverance demonstrate a growing commitment to safeguarding this centuries-old artistic tradition while developing skills that may contribute to future livelihood opportunities. Their journey stands as an inspiring example of cultural preservation through education and practice.
