Odyssey invites you to an interactive session (offline) on the topic, "IITGn's Own Satellite?" by Prof. Soumyabrata Chakrabarty. In this talk, we would discuss the possibility of launching a satellite made by IITGn students, the various parameters & constraints involved, and more!
About the speaker:
Prof. Chakrabarty is a senior ISRO scientist and a visiting faculty at IIT Gandhinagar. He has over 25 years of experience working as a scientist in the Microwave sensors department.

The Great Conjunction
This event refers to the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. On 21st December, both of the planets will be seen as a single bright star in the southwestern sky. This single bright star is popularly known as the ' Christmas star'.The separation between the two planets will be 0.1°. The actual distance between the two will be about 735 million kilometers. The planets regularly appear to pass each other in the solar system, with the positions of Jupiter and Saturn being aligned in the sky about once every 20 years. But what makes this event special this time is that it’s been nearly 400 years since the planets passed with that much closeness to each other in the sky and nearly 800 years since the alignment of Saturn and Jupiter occurred at night, as it will be in 2020.

Star trails around Polaris
Stars appear to move across the night sky from east to west due to the rotational motion of earth, around its polar axis.
Polaris (Or North Star/Dhruv Tara/Dhruva Nakshatra) appears to be at a fixed location all through the night while the stars (and constellations) move about around it.
In this image as well you can see stars 'circling' around Polaris. The stars closer to the pole appear to make a smaller arc than the ones further away.
Now, if you look closely, even Polaris has moved a little! This is because Polaris is not exactly at our north pole. The north pole and polaris appear to be about half a degree apart or about the same size as the full moon appears to our naked eye, as seen from earth.
