Vocationalisation of Education in India :

UGC has come with a new degree Program called as B.Voc ( Bachelor of Vocation). This degree program is a unique blend of knowledge+skills.

Formerly, it was introduced as an add-on degree course but now it has been institutionalized through creating 100 "Deen Dayal Upadhyay Centres for Knowledge Acquisition and Up-gradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (KAUSHAL)".

Under the scheme of KAUSHAL, UGC will provide financial support of Rs. 5 crores in the 12th Five Year Plan. Rs. 5 corores will be bifurcated into three categories i.e. Start-up Grant for Infrastructure Development (Rs. 2 Crores), Recruitment Support (1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors and 4 Assistant Professors, 1 Technical Assistant and 1 Multi-tasking Staff (Rs. 2 crores)) and Operating Cost (Rs. 1 crore).

The KAUSHAL centres will be a separate autonomous entities inside the colleges/universities.

Trade-sectors like Automobiles, Entertainment, IT, Telecommunication, Marketing, Agriculture, Construction, Applied Arts, Tourism, Printing and Publishing are covered under the B.Voc program.

The USP of B.Voc. degree is Multiple Entry and Multiple Exit mode for students. In order to validate multiple-entry and multiple-exit, UGC has prepared a National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) through which the students will be provided required "credits" for the award of certificates/degrees.

An illustrative B.Voc (Acting) programme : (18 credits per semester)
1) students completing one semester (18 credits) of the course will be awarded a certificate (Acting)
2) students having certificate (Acting) completing one more semester (18+18=36 credits) will be awarded Diploma (Acting)
3) students having Diploma (Acting) will be provided Advanced Diploma (Acting) after completion of four semesters (36+36=72 credits).
4) and students having Advance Diploma (Acting) will be awarded B.Voc (Acting) after completion of six semesters (72+36=108 credits)

There is an interesting blend of School+college in this course. The schools will be providing education of level 1 to 4 in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th std. and colleges will provide level 5 to 7 education in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of the course. Any student having 10+2 or equivalent qualification with level 1 to 4 education in specific trade (i.e. Acting) can get admission in the degree program of that trade.

We have heard the recent speeches of our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi indicating to make India a Skill-hub. This program will help in creating more skill-oriented manpower in the country.

Colleges and Universities can send their applications to the UGC for grant of the B.Voc program. The last date for the application has been extended from 31st January to 25th February 2015 for starting B.Voc program from academic year 2015.
