We are pleased to share our latest publication, “Heat transfer and material flow modeling of dissimilar consumable tool-additive friction stir deposition (CT-AFSD)” in Progress in Additive Manufacturing.

Consumable Tool-Additive Friction Stir Deposition (CT-AFSD) is a variant of the trending AFSD process that enables solid-state material deposition for surface coatings and repair, while offering significant potential for advanced additive manufacturing applications. In this study, we developed and experimentally validated a Finite Volume Method (FVM)-based Heat Transfer and Material Flow model to capture the underlying process physics during the dissimilar deposition of AA 6061 aluminium on CR01 steel. By resolving the coupled heat generation, thermal behaviour, material flow, torque, and viscosity, the model provided a detailed understanding of how process conditions govern material deposition and deposit formation, with excellent agreement with experimental data.

Going beyond the process-level understanding, the computationally predicted thermal and flow fields were correlated with the experimentally observed microstructure and micro-indentation hardness evolution, providing deeper insights into deposit formation and the material behaviour during the deposition. Overall, this integrated computational-experimental approach establishes a strong process-structure-property relationship for the dissimilar CT-AFSD process, offering a pathway towards its optimization and broader application.

We would like to also acknowledge our collaborators from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) Surat, Prof. Vivek Kalyankar and Dr. Dr. Gautam Chudasama Chudasama for their valuable inputs, research ideation, and experimental support that made this work possible.

Congratulations to all the authors on this work! Looking forward to many more such exciting ideas, and research endeavours in the future.

AMPRG is delighted to share that our group member, Prachi Sharma, has successfully defended her PhD thesis and is now officially Dr. Prachi Sharma! She is the 7th PhD graduate of the Advanced Materials Processing Research Group (AMPRG), IIT Gandhinagar.

Prachi joined AMPRG at IIT Gandhinagar as a PhD scholar in 2021 and has been a recipient of the esteemed Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF).

Her doctoral research focused on developing advanced numerical models to investigate heat transfer, material flow, and microstructural evolution in Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD), an emerging solid-state additive manufacturing process. Her work contributes to a better understanding and optimization of friction stir-based solid-state manufacturing technologies.

Prachi successfully defended her PhD thesis on 15th July 2026, marking an important milestone in her academic journey.

We congratulate Dr. Prachi Sharma and Prof. Amit Arora on this outstanding achievement and wish Dr. Prachi Sharma continued success in all her future academic and professional endeavors.

A major milestone for AMPRG!

We are thrilled to share that our startup, Advanced Chill Tech, has been awarded a ₹20 lakh Seed Grant at the IIM MATRIx 2026 Start-up Hackathon held at IIT Hyderabad.

At Advanced Chill Tech, we are developing Liquid Cold Plates using Friction Stir Channelling (FSC)—a novel solid-state manufacturing process that creates embedded cooling channels without melting the material. Our technology enables high-performance, leak-proof liquid cold plates with superior thermal efficiency, structural integrity, and sustainability for applications in battery thermal management, AI data centres, high-performance computing, and power electronics.

We sincerely thank the organizers and jury of IIM MATRIx 2026 for this opportunity. We also gratefully acknowledge the pioneering contributions of our former AMPRG members—Dr. Sheetal Pandya, Mr. Sooraj Patel, and Mr. Sambit Sahoo—whose efforts laid the foundation for this technology. A special thanks to Epsilon Engineering Pvt. Ltd. for their unwavering support in translating this research towards commercialization, and to our entire team for making this achievement possible.

This seed grant is an important step towards accelerating product development, strengthening industry collaborations, and bringing our technology closer to market.

The journey has just begun!
