📝 Talk Title: Solar Thermal Technology: The Dormant Energy Giant

Prof. Shekhar will discuss the fundamentals and advances in solar thermal technology (STT), covering parabolic trough and solar tower systems, open volumetric air receivers, solar convective furnaces with thermal storage, and ongoing efforts in solar-driven hydrogen generation via high-temperature ammonia and water decomposition.

His extensive work spans transport phenomena, electrochemistry, process design, extractive metallurgy, pollution control, and solar-thermal engineering, with several impactful technological contributions such as:

• Solar convective furnace for materials processing
• Volumetric air receiver–based solar thermal systems
• Next-generation Hall–Héroult cell designs
• Advanced leaching reactor design
• Electroremediation of Cr(VI)
• Shaped-tube electrochemical drilling for superalloys

🌟 Welcoming Professor Kiran Sasikumar to IIT Gandhinagar! 🌟

We are delighted to welcome Professor Kiran Sasikumar, who has recently joined the Department of Materials Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar as Guest Faculty.

Professor Sasikumar holds a BTech from NIT Calicut (2009) and a PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA (2014). He brings extensive international experience, having worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the USA and later as an Application Scientist and Scientific Software Developer in Germany.

His academic and research interests include:
🔹 Atomistic & continuum-scale simulations
🔹 Multiscale modelling and scientific workflows
🔹 Machine learning for materials and computational modelling
🔹 Crystal-structure prediction
🔹 Nanoscale heat transfer & thermodynamics

His expertise in advanced computational methods and materials modelling will be a valuable addition to IITGN’s Materials Engineering research and teaching ecosystem.

In situ Characterization and Interfacial Engineering for Enhanced Composite Manufacturing

Overview:

Prof. Namilae will discuss an integrated approach combining:
✔️ In-situ monitoring of composite curing using DIC and a custom autoclave
✔️ AI-driven defect detection using Zero-Bias Deep Neural Networks
✔️ Interfacial engineering via ZnO nanowire growth to reduce residual stresses and improve composite performance

This talk brings together advanced manufacturing, explainable AI, and materials engineering to improve reliability of autoclave-processed composites.
