The Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 13/08/2022

DSE-NEWSFEED:
The Energy Conservation Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha TV on 8th August, 2022. The bill was initially introduced on 3rd August to regulate the energy consumption by equipment, appliances, buildings, and industries.

Key Features:
1. To promote the use of non-fossil fuels, including ethanol, green hydrogen and biomass. Different consumption thresholds may be specified for different non-fossil sources and consumer categories. Failure to meet the obligation for use of energy from non-fossil sources will be punishable with a penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh.

2. To introduce a Carbon Credit Trading Scheme and issue a Carbon Credit Trading Certificate to entities registered under the scheme. Carbon credit implies a tradeable permit to produce a specified amount of carbon emissions.

3. To specify energy conservation code for buildings. This new code will provide norms for energy efficiency and conservation, use of renewable energy, and other requirements for green buildings.

4. To specify energy consumption standards for equipment and appliances which consume, generate, transmit, or supply energy, including vehicles and vessels (such as ships and boats). The failure to comply with standards will be punishable with a penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh.

5. To update the Bureau of Energy Efficiency - ऊर्जा दक्षता ब्यूरो (BEE) committee, currently having 20-26 members to 31-37 members, increasing the current number of secretaries to 12.

Greetings of the day!

DSE Research Update:
We are happy to share our publication titled "A powerful approach to develop nitrogen-doped graphene sheets: theoretical and experimental framework" by Senior Research Fellow of SRDC, Mr. Suresh Kumar Vemuri along with our alumni Dr. Harsh Chaliyawala under the guidance of our faculties.
In this paper, the authors have reported a novel route to develop highly conductive graphene sheets using camphor as a natural precursor followed by nitrogen doping via low-temperature post-annealing treatment.
