Gogo or Gogro the festival that Sindhis observe
Gogo, as per a legend, was grandson of King Gopichand who ruled a place in Thatta. Like Sita Mata, Gogo's mother too was left in Jungle with her child by the King. Gogo grew up in Jungle and the legend says that he was immune to snake poison as he was probably bit by many snakes ( many believe that snakes would feed him poison) and hence when he grew up he started treating snake bites.
There are many stories and beliefs surrounding Gogo's life but for now let's just say that Gogo was and still is, known as God of snakes.
So Gogo festival is celebrated in honor of Gogo, the God of snakes.
Most of our ancestors were either farmers or lived in villages around jungles. In the monsoon when it rains, the burrows where snakes live, are filled with water and hence snakes tend to move out and find shelters. Due to that many people would come across snakes in or around homes. In the mode of panic, even the non posionous snakes were killed. Now if you remember your school lessons, you may recall how snakes are known to be farmer's best friends as snakes kill rodents and pests that often destroy crops. But if snakes are killed, the ecosystem would be disturbed and there would be more rodents and less crops. So to sensitize people about snakes and to remove the fear of snakes from their minds, Naag Panchami is celebrated where people bow down to snakes and offer milk to snakes.
So to make sure that people don't kill snakes out of fear, a festive ritual was spinned around.
Sindhis cook food on the eve of Gogo and eat only 'stale' or Thadho ( cold) food on Naagpanchmi.
Lolo, Dal paata, koki, besreen, fried bhindi, potatoes, stuffed karela, dahi wada, methi etc could be made and stocked for Gogo.
For Pooja, seven akhryun ( small Lola) are made and kept on dangi ( clay plate). Unlike Thadri, the akhryun for gogo are not cooked on dangi. As usual an akho of raw rice and sugar is put on the akhryun and the stove on which Lola is cooked is used to place dangi and it is not lit on Gogo.
