YouTube says 1 billion people visit per month

YouTube says more than 1 billion people are now visiting its online
video site each month to watch everything from clips of cute kittens
to scenes of social unrest around the world.
The milestone announced on Wednesday marks another step in
YouTube's evolution from a quirky startup launched in 2005 to one of
the most influential forces in today's media landscape.
YouTube crossed the 1 billion threshold five months after Facebook
Inc. said its online social network had reached that figure.
The vast audience has given YouTube's owner, Google Inc., another
lucrative channel for selling online ads beyond its dominant Internet
search engine.
Google bought YouTube for $1.76 billion in 2006 when the video site
had an estimated 50 million users worldwide.AP

Blackberry to shut BBM Music service

Madrid: The BBM Music streaming service will be closed down June 2
after a 19-month run following the completion of 'a strategic review
of the business', Canadian tech company Blackberry said.
The Asi cloud music platform will be shut down and customers will
get a one-month subscription to the RDIO service, Blackberry said in a
statement Thursday.
Blackberry, formerly known as Research in Motion, launched BBM
Music in August 2011, giving users a cloud music service they could
use to set up a profile with 50 songs and share them with their
contacts.

Google is discontinuing a number of its services in a bid to refocus expertise and streamline its offerings, chief among them being its Google Reader and the desktop version of its Snapseed photo editing software for Windows and Mac users.
In apost on its official blog, Google claimed the decisions were part of its ongoing ‘spring clean' -- which began in 2011 and was intended to free up its workforce and its systems to focus on more important and popular services and business areas.
Google Reader, which aggregates users' RSS feeds and synchronizes with other products and services within Google Drive, will stop on July 1, while the desktop version of Snapseed is being withdrawn immediately to new customers.
However, there is no need to panic. Existing Snapseed users will still be able to download software updates and access Google support. As for Google Reader users, the company claims that by using its Google Takeout transfer service, they should be able to move their existing subscriptions seamlessly to any number of third-party reader apps or RSS services.
Google was also quick to assure customers that the Snapseed app is not going anywhere. The app, which offers photo editing, filters and effects and is available to iOS and Android device owners, has recently experienced a spike in popularity following the continuing fallout from Instagram's terms and conditions changes. Snapseed offers much of the same functionality of Instagram but has one major advantage, that the edited image doesn't have to be shared on a social media site and can instead be saved on the device. Its filters can also be applied to existing photos in an album.

Apple is set for a possible summer launch of the next iPhone, rather than a fall launch like the last two models, according to a report Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal.
Apple Inc. is also working on a cheaper iPhone model that could win it some market share in developing countries,the paper said. It cited unnamed people "familiar with the device's production."
The report is in line with the expectations of company watchers and Wall Street analysts. The iPhone 5 costs around $600, and while Apple maintains older iPhones in production, even those aren't cheap enough to compete effectively against low-end smartphones running Google Inc.'s Android software.
Apple doesn't comment on future products before its launch events. Its executives usually emphasize that the company's goal is to make the best products, not the cheapest ones.
The Journal said Apple is set to start production of the new iPhone within the next three months. It's apparently relyingon sources among the Asian companies that supply components for the phone andassemble it.
