The Centre has issued an ordinance for protection of doctors under which cases of assault on medics will be non bailable, Information and Broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar said Wednesday.

“Changes in the Epidemic Diseases Act through ordinance have been approved by the cabinet. It will be implemented after the President’s sanction. Offences will be made non bailable and cognizable,” Javadekar said at a briefing.

“Investigations will be completed in 30 days. There will be stringent punishment including fines up to Rs 2 lakh. If serious cases, the punishment will be imprisonment up to seven years and fine up to Rs five lakh,” he said.

The decision came hours after Union home minister Amit Shah during a meeting with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) assured doctors of their safety following reports of attacks on health workers in different parts of the country.

The IMA had said on Monday it would observe a ‘Black Day’ on April 23 if the government does not enact a central law on violence against healthcare workers.

Doctors affiliated with various associations have been urging the government to bring in a law to make assaults against them non bailable.

Treating government for its dementia because you forgot your promises, but we didn't.

From the last years what we have seen is only harassment. From fighting for the healthy food to few drops of water to drink, we have to make authorities realise that we are humans here, learning to treat humans. From the last year we are trying to make the government realise that we hold an important place in the society therefore, we deserve respectable treatment but everything goes in vain. From giving doctors ₹15000 initial salary to interns being paid a meagre amount of ₹9000 government has shown it true colors. They dare to hike fees without hesitation but when it comes to repay, their accounts are empty. The government has no credibility to their words. Last time it was promised by the health minister himself that the stipend would be increased but now it's been more 6 months, and nothing has changed. More distressing is that our own people are not supporting us. Letters have been sent to DRME but to no avail. What kind of governance is this? If we have to fight for what we deserve, what is the use of this government? We may not get our rights but we don't want our juniors to suffer the same fate. The system may have lost its spine but we have not ,we stand united.

We, the students to GGSMCH stand in solidarity with the students and residents of NRSMCH.
Such acts of violence against doctors are extremely uncalled for and should be condemned.
The comparison between the work of police personnel and doctors is ridiculous. While the police officers undergo training to deal with such situations and defend themselves, the doctors undergo a training for years to treat the patients, not to defend themselves against attacks that are unprovoked.
We’re not asking to be treated like Gods, just the basic human respect.
We will speak up for our rights.
