From Newsrooms to Nation Building: Understanding Journalism and UPSC - IOF 2026
The Journalism Internship Programme provided students of Delhi Public School Faridabad with an enriching and immersive introduction to the dynamic world of journalism, media, public affairs and contemporary global issues. Conducted under the mentorship of Mr. Saket Jha, leading UPSC mentor, TEDx Speaker and a Crossroads Fellow of Harvard Business School. The programme enabled students to develop a deeper understanding of the role of journalism in informing society, shaping public opinion and strengthening democratic values.
Throughout the internship, students explored the core principles of journalism including news values, ethical reporting, fact-checking, source verification, news gathering and newsroom functioning. They received hands-on training in news writing, headline creation, lead writing, feature writing, interviewing techniques, editorial analysis, podcast production and broadcast journalism. Through practical exercises, students learned how to research stories, conduct interviews, prepare news scripts, present news bulletins and communicate information accurately and effectively.
A significant component of the programme focused on digital and visual journalism. Students examined the growing impact of social media, mobile journalism (MOJO), multimedia storytelling, photography, photo captions, infographics and visual communication. They gained insights into how journalists use technology and digital platforms to create engaging content for diverse audiences while maintaining journalistic integrity and credibility.
The internship also broadened students’ awareness of current affairs, governance, international relations, and public policy. Interactive discussions explored India’s foreign policy under various Prime Ministers, India’s strategic relations with neighbouring countries, the role of global organisations such as NATO, BRICS, G20, and the United Nations, as well as significant political, economic, diplomatic and geopolitical developments shaping the contemporary world. These sessions encouraged students to critically analyse events, evaluate multiple perspectives and understand the interconnected nature of global affairs.
As a culminating experience, students undertook an individual journalism project in a medium of their choice such as a news report, investigative article, feature story, interview, podcast, photo essay, or multimedia presentation. This project provided an opportunity to apply the concepts, skills and professional practices learned during the programme while fostering creativity, independent research and responsible storytelling.
