Activities at the Pattanam Archaeological Site witnessed enthusiastic participation from the young generation.
Students from Kesari Vayanashala Pooyyappalli, a locality closely connected to the Pattanam region, visited the site and actively engaged in heritage learning by observing museum-related activities. Their participation reflects the growing involvement of nearby communities in understanding and preserving local history.
The children interacted with internship participants, engaged in discussions on archaeology, and explored how archaeological materials are studied, documented, and preserved. Such interactions play an important role in inspiring the next generation to connect with cultural heritage and archaeological research.
These moments reflect meaningful exchanges between students, interns, and researchers, highlighting archaeological spaces as living centres of learning, interaction, and public engagement.

Pottery is the most abundant artifact category at Pattanam, as in any archaeological site. Ninety-nine percent of the unearthed artifacts from Pattanam include pottery, particularly Coarse Redware Ceramic (CRW). Coarse Redware Ceramic (CRW) refers to a type of pottery characterized by its coarse texture and reddish color. It is often found at archaeological sites and is typically associated with utilitarian purposes due to its durability and low cost of production. CRW is commonly used for making various household items such as pots, jars, bowls, dishes, plates, lids, lamps and other containers. This type of pottery is usually handmade or wheel-made and fired at relatively low temperatures between 650 and 800 °C, resulting in its distinctive appearance.
Pottery, a low-cost and easily breakable material, was produced in large quantities at Pattanam throughout its occupation, spanning the Early Historic, Medieval, and Modern Periods. Pottery sherds were abandoned within the settlement itself after use, as pottery does not decay easily, unlike organic materials. After firing, pottery is very well preserved in almost all conditions due to the clay's transformation into a sturdy, plastic nature. We assume that the majority of the CRW pottery from Pattanam must have been produced at Pattanam or its vicinity in the Lower Periyar delta of Kerala, and the clay is also procured from the close vicinity. The term 'local' is used to label this pottery group; we can also refer to them as regional pottery. From the archaeological excavations at Pattanam from 2007 to 2015, spanning nine seasons, nearly 4.5 million Coarse Redware body sherds and more than 500,000 diagnostic sherds, including rims, necks, handles, bases, decorated pieces, perforated pottery, lids, oven k***s, spouts, organically impressed pottery, edge-ground pottery, sherds with scripts, and sherds with graffiti, were unearthed. CRW pottery is valuable to archaeologists as it provides insights into ancient cultures, their daily lives, and their technological capabilities. The preliminary study on the Coarse Redware Ceramics from Pattanam is available in the Pattanam excavation interim reports of 2013, 2014, and 2015.
