✂️ Hair Sculpting in ZBrush — Short Artist Brief from Voidart Academy

🧠 Understand Hair Before Sculpting
Great hair sculpting starts with observation, not brushes. Hair is not random — it follows flow, structure, and gravity. Always study real references and break hair into forms → volumes → strands.
🌊 Hair Flow
Hair grows from the scalp roots and flows outward.
Establish primary flow lines first
Follow gravity, head tilt, and motion
Avoid noisy, chaotic strokes ❌
👉 Think ribbons, not noodles.

🦴 Underlying Structure
Hair sits on:
Skull anatomy
Hairline & parting
Major clumps are anchored at roots
Block hair as big masses before adding detail.

📦 Volume (Most Important!)
Hair should feel full and alive, not flat.
Start with the primary volume
Add secondary clumps
Finish with tertiary strands
⚠️ Over-detailing without volume kills realism.

🧵 Types of Hair (Form-Based)
Straight – smooth flow, subtle breaks
Wavy – S-shaped rhythm 🌊
Curly – looping forms 🌀
Coily – tight volume-driven shapes
🧩 Types of Hair Strands (Sculpting Layers)
Primary Strands – big readable shapes
Secondary Strands – break symmetry
Flyaways – minimal, only at the end ✨
🛠️ ZBrush Brushes (Reference from Image)
Move Brush 🖐️ – adjust flow & silhouette
Standard Brush 🎨 – carve main strands
DamStandard ✂️ – sharp strand separation & depth
Clay / ClayBuildup – build volume
Pinch 🤏 – tighten and sharpen edges
🧩 Workflow:
Block → Flow → Volume → Strands → Polish

🔥 Pro Tip
Always zoom out while sculpting hair. If it reads well from far, details will work up close.
