One night when the whole world was sleeping, a thief broke into the house of a washer man.

The washer man was fast asleep but the donkey and the dog were awake.

The dog decided not to bark since the master did not take good care of him and wanted to teach him a lesson.

The donkey got worried and said to the dog that if he doesn't bark, the donkey will have to do something himself.

The dog did not change his mind and the donkey started braying loudly.

Hearing the donkey bray, the thief ran away, the master woke up and started beating the donkey for braying in the middle of the night for no reason.

Moral of the story: One must not engage in duties other than his own.

Now take a new look at the same story.

The washer man was like a typical top management corporate guy.

He had the fundas of looking at the bigger picture and thinking out of the box.

He was convinced that there must be some reason for the donkey to bray in the night.

He walked outside a little and did some fact finding, applied a research approach, figured out from the ground realities that there was a thief who broke in and the donkey only wanted to alert him about it.

Looking at the donkey's extra initiative and going beyond the call of the duty, he rewarded him with lot of hay and other perks and the donkey became his favorite pet.

The dog's life didn't change much, except that now the donkey was more motivated in doing the dogs duties as well.

In the Appraisal the dog managed an "8".

The donkey was rated as "9".

Soon the dog realized that the donkey is taking care of his duties and he can enjoy his life sleeping and lazing around.

The donkey had to live up to his already high performance standards.

Soon he was over burdened with work and always under pressure and now is looking for a switch....

Moral of the story-Remains the same- "One must not engage in duties other than his own"

Disclaimer: All characters in the story are not at all imaginary. Any resemblance is sheer bad luck

If You Want To Be Successful, Don't Confuse Being Busy With Getting The Right Things Done

You can make an extremely credible argument that John Wooden is the most successful coach who ever lived.

He won ten NCAA national basketball championships–and seven in a row in a 12-year period—as head coach at UCLA.

And while you can find professional coaches, such as Red Auerbach, who did slightly better, Auerbach and his peers had the luxury of keeping players like Bill Russell for extended periods.

Wooden’s players graduated every four years–and for most of his career were only allowed to play varsity for three–and he would have to find new ones and start teaching all over again.

When people asked him for his ”secrets” of success, Wooden would invariably say one key factor was that you never want to confuse activity with accomplishment.

The simplest example of that?
Just because you show up at work every day doesn’t mean you are getting anything done.

In fact, thinking about the numbers of hours you work, just confuses the issue.

Time is not a factor. Quality, making progress, and accomplishing your goals is.

The activity–going to work; returning emails; going to meetings–in and of itself doesn’t lead to accomplishing anything (although it can easily take up most of your day. A friend of mine, who has never achieved as much as I thought she could, says she spends three-hours a day just returning emails.)

What does it take to get the job done right?

Wooden believed that you had to follow a defined, planned out, routine that maximized efficiency. And you had to do that until it became second nature to you.

Sounds like good advice to me.

My takeaways from John Wooden?

1) Before you turn off your computer for the night the question to ask is not how busy you were during the day, but how much closer you came to accomplishing your most important goals.

2) Do you have a routine in place to get the absolute most out of tomorrow?

Give Unemployed Candidates a Second Look

Going with your gut in hiring decisions can work out well, but it can also mean acting on unstated—in many cases unconscious—bias. Recent research shows that after someone is unemployed for more than a month, positive responses from employers fall sharply and decline further as time passes, even if he or she has the same qualifications as other applicants. But overlooking these candidates, like ignoring any other potential good hire, will likely cost you. They are likely to be cheaper and easier to hire because you don’t have to woo them away from their current employer. Such candidates are persistent, determined to succeed, and will likely be grateful to have a job—and gratitude is associated with many aspects of good job performance.

Get People to See Your Potential
Overcoming people's perceptions of you isn't easy. But getting bosses, peers, or potential clients to realize, and remember, what you're doing now—and grasp what you're truly capable of—is important if you want them to think of you when new opportunities arise. Here’s how:

Create content. Blog posts, podcasts, videos, or even a savvy and professional Twitter feed demonstrates your expertise and enables people to judge you based on the quality of the material you produce, not your history or credentials.

Find a wingman. Team up with someone and take turns promoting each other. At cocktail parties or conferences, you both can make a point of mentioning each other's accomplishments or bringing up topics where your partner excels.

HOW GOOD ARE YOU IN LATERAL THINKING?

The Lateral Thinking Puzzles and Solutions are always very interesting. Let me give you some Puzzles below first.

PUZZLES:

(1) A truck is stuck at a road under a bridge. It's just a couple of inches too high to pass under. Any other route, avoiding the bridge would add a couple of hours to the journey. A young boy comes along and again saves the day. How?

(2) A man is replacing a wheel on his car, when he accidentally drops the four nuts used to hold the wheel on the car, and they fall into a deep drain, irretrievably lost. A passing girl offers him a solution which enables him to drive home. What is it?

(3) How could a baby fall out of a twenty-story building onto the ground and live?

(4) A man and his son are in a car crash. The father is killed and the child is taken to hospital gravely injured. When he gets there, the surgeon says, 'I can't operate on this boy - for he is my son!!!' How can this possibly be?

(5) There are six eggs in the basket. Six people each take one of the eggs. How can it be that one egg is left in the basket?

(6) A man went to a party and drank some of the punch. He then left early. Everyone else at the party who drank the punch subsequently died of poisoning. Why did the man not die?

Leaders, Stop These Behaviors Now

If you want to empower, engage, or motivate others, don't just focus on increasing your positive behaviors. Pay attention to the things you need to stop doing at the same time. Here are three to avoid:

Judgmental body language. No one likes perceived condescension. Watch out for scowling, furrowed brows, and quizzical or sarcastic looks (as if to say, “Are you stupid?”). While seemingly harmless, each of these subtle darts creates a considerable amount of relationship damage.

Interrupting. It's almost impossible for people to feel safe if the boss takes up most of the airtime or cuts people off. Do more listening than talking, and let people finish their thoughts.

Being inconsistent. It’s hard on employees to wonder who is going to show up: "smiling, charming, funny boss" or "judgmental, intense, snapping manager." Try to keep your tone and personality consistent so people know what to expect.

Improve Communication with Your Virtual Coworkers

When interacting with colleagues who work remotely, even the simplest gesture can be misinterpreted in the absence of the usual visual cues. Here are three ways to make sure you’re understood when you’re not face-to-face:

Picture your colleague. When emailing or calling him, try to imagine your coworker at his desk listening to you. This visualization will increase your empathy and improve your chances of clearly saying what you mean.

Spell things out. Don't just say, "Circle back with me," for example. Be clear about follow up. Do you expect a phone call or an email? When?

Respond promptly. When you don’t reply right away to an email or voicemail, you leave the person wondering whether you value the relationship or not. Answer quickly, even just to say you’ll send a more complete answer later.

CEO's Stupidity

On walking into the factory, the CEO noticed an young guy leaning against the wall, doing nothing.

He approached the young man and calmly asked him, " How much do you earn? "

The young man was quite amazed that he was asked such a personal question, he replied, none the less, " I earn $ 2000.00 a month, Sir. Why? "

Without answering, the CEO took out his wallet and removed $ 6000.00 cash and gave it to the young man and said, " Around here I pay people for working, not for standing around and looking pretty ! Here is your 3 months salary, now GET OUT and don't come back ".

The young man turned around and was quickly out of sight.

Noticing a few onlookers, the CEO said in a very upset manner, "And that applies for everybody in this company".

He approached one of the onlookers and asked him, " Who's the young man that i just fired? "

To which an amazing reply came, " He was the pizza delivery man, Sir.... ! "

$ 1,000 Parrot

A man wanted to buy his son a parrot as a birthday present.

The next day he went to the pet shop and saw three identical parrots in a cage.

He asked the clerk, "how much for the parrot on the right ?

The Owner said it was $250.

"$250 ?", the man said. "Well what does he do ?

"He knows how to use all of the functions of Microsoft Office 2000", responds the clerk. "He can do all of your spreadsheets and type all of your letters ."

The man then asked what the second parrot cost.

The clerk replied, $500, but he not only knows Office 2000, but is an expert computer programmer.

Finally, the man inquired about the cost of the last parrot.

The clerk replied, "$ 1,000."

Curious as to how a bird can cost $1,000, the man asked what this bird's specialty was.

The clerk replies, " Well to be honest, I haven't seen him do anything. But the other two call him "BOSS" !
