🔋 SPARC Sponsored Workshop on “Lithium and Beyond Li-ion Battery Systems”
We are thrilled to share that EES Lab, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, successfully organized a SPARC-sponsored two-day workshop and seminar on “Lithium and Beyond Li-ion Battery Systems” on March 5–6, 2026.

The workshop served as a platform to bring together leading researchers, scientists, and students working in the domain of advanced energy storage and electrochemical technologies. The event featured a series of expert lectures and technical discussions focusing on fundamental understanding, materials innovation, diagnostics, recycling, and next-generation battery systems beyond conventional lithium-ion technologies.

We are thankful to speakers Prof. Kothandaraman Ramanujam, Prof. Perumal Elumalai, Dr. Kirtan Sahoo, Naga Phani Aetukuri, Dr. Vilas G. Pol, Aiswarya Bhaskar, Dr. V. Aravindan, Dr. B.V. Sarada, Dr. Arup Mahata, Dr. Pratyay Basak and Dr. Narendra Kurra for their insightful lectures, and grateful for the support from SPARC (Ministry of Education, Govt. of India) and BioLogic Science Instruments Pvt. Ltd.

In addition to the invited talks, the workshop also included technical demonstrations and hands-on sessions on battery research methodologies, including electrochemical workstations and battery cell fabrication techniques. These sessions provided participants with valuable practical exposure to tools and experimental approaches widely used in modern battery research.

It was a pleasure hosting Prof. Shinichi KOMABA and Asst. Prof. Zachary Gossage from the Department of Applied Chemistry, Tokyo University of Science, Japan, at IIT Hyderabad, including a visit to the EES Lab.

Prof. Komaba delivered an engaging and insightful talk entitled “A Journey through the Battery Chemistry of Group 1 Elements.” The lecture provided a deep yet open perspective on the fundamentals and advancements in alkali metal battery chemistry, drawing from decades of pioneering research.
The session sparked thoughtful discussions among faculty, researchers, and students, highlighting both fundamental challenges and emerging opportunities in next-generation energy storage technologies.

Hot off the press!
Check out our recent publication on the easy and scalable route to upcycle NMC cathode from spent Lithium-ion battery into NiMnCo- oxalate material. The material is utilized as supercapacitor electrode. Further, the fabricated supercapacitor successfully powered an electrochromic device. Check the details in the attached link.
