Centre for Cognitive Activities (CCA) CCA, Centre for Cognitive Activities, is the focal point where convergence of all technical and scientific endeavours takes place

Initially the official science club of NIT Durgapur, CCA now is a non-profit organisation comprising 75 odd tech enthusiast students from 2nd through 4th year. Bulk of the extracurricular activities held in the college all the year round are organised by CCA , with the objective of probing the dark recesses of human mind so that the grey cells are stimulated to create , conceptualize and evolve, t

riggering a rebellion of the new age mind against baseless conventions and meek acceptance. Numerous workshops and lectures are organised, thus introducing the students to new vistas in the field of technology. One of the main of all the year-long activities of the club is the convention of the Annual Techno-Management fest of the college, Aarohan, which incidentally happens to be the second largest of its kind in Eastern India. Started in the year 2003, it has been leading the light of instilling a culture of science, technology and innovation among the youth of the nation. With more than 40 events covering all genres of technology and management, Aarohan brings some of the best solutions for the mankind to the fore.

Alzheimer’s disease, the leading cause of dementia, affects millions worldwide through progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. While most conventional therapies focus on targeting amyloid plaques, Professor Sandrine Thuret and her team at King’s College London explored a different strategy by addressing DNA damage, one of the earliest drivers of the disease. Their research investigated KCL-286, a selective Retinoic Acid Receptor-β (RARβ) agonist that has already completed phase I human safety trials for spinal cord injury.

Using a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease, the researchers demonstrated that KCL-286 enhanced the expression of BRCA1, a key protein responsible for repairing damaged DNA, significantly reducing DNA double-strand breaks in neurons. The treatment also suppressed chronic neuroinflammation by reducing the abnormal activation of microglia and astrocytes. Although these findings are currently limited to preclinical mouse studies, KCL-286’s established human safety profile makes it a promising candidate for future Alzheimer’s clinical trials and combating other neurodegenerative disorders.

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong have developed a brain inspired chip that can operate just above absolute zero, one of the coldest environments achievable. Unlike traditional electronics that struggle in extreme cold, this chip is designed to mimic the way neurons and synapses in the brain process information. It can adapt its behavior and handle signals in a more flexible way, bringing computing closer to brain like intelligence.

This breakthrough could become important for the future of quantum computing, where machines also need ultra cold environments to function. By combining brain inspired chips with quantum systems, future computers may be able to process and make decisions locally without constantly transferring data between different temperature environments.
