India suffered consecutive T20I series defeats against Ireland and England after winning the 2026 T20 World Cup. The defeat in Ireland was India’s first T20I series loss since their 2023 tour of the West Indies, the first of Gambhir’s tenure, and the first to Ireland. The BCCI conducted a review of the tour, too,

“Which team in the history of sport has gone undefeated from one World Cup to the next and gone on to win the World Cup?" Gambhir said on Jio Star’. “It didn’t take these guys 17 years to win a second World Cup. It took them only 17 months to win a third World Cup. Suddenly, one bad series or three bad games here and there do not make them bad players or make us a bad side."

India men’s head coach Gautam Gambhir said Shubman Gill was ‘very fortunate’ that he had seniors like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma around to ‘help him on and off the field’ and make the tough selection choices. Gambhir said Gill, as a young captain, has done the tough bits of the job quite well, and backed him to overturn his hitherto underwhelming ODI record eventually.

“In ODIs, he (Gill) is very fortunate that he has got the likes of Rohit and Virat to help him on and off the field," Gambhir said while speaking to JioStar ahead of India’s home season. “Leaving out anyone in Indian cricket from the playing eleven is always going to be tough. But when you have to do that as a young captain, it is probably the toughest job for any coach and captain to do it. So far, he has done that. He has actually ticked all the boxes," he added.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir revealed that social media buzz doesn't affect selection.

He said : "social media or outside noise doesn't decide the playing XI. The playing XI is decided by who, in that dressing room, the coach and captain feel can win us the match, what the best playing XI is, and who has done well for such a long time. Because if Vaibhav plays today, then it's going to be a tough conversation between me and whoever we leave out, whether it's Abhishek or Sanju."

Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif made a massive claim by predicting that a star player would be dropped in the near future to make way for Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the playing XI. India are currently in Japan, gearing up for their Asian Games 2026 cricket campaign.

Mohammad Kaif predicted that Tilak Varma, who is the vice-captain of the Indian T20I side, could make way for Suryavanshi. However, he also added all-rounder Shivam Dube's name, stating that he was playing more as a batter than as an all-rounder who can bowl. He reckoned that either of the two would be removed in the next six months.

"I understand that Tilak is the vice-captain. But vice-captains have also been dropped before. I do not want to go there. Shivam Dube is not scoring in every game and still has to prove himself. Fielding is also his weakness, and he is not a proper bowling all-rounder. He is only playing as a batter. After six months, either Tilak or Dube will be out. You will have to remove one, and Suryavanshi will play. I am saying this right now," he said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Former cricketer Ravi Ashwin feels that the chief selector phased him out, he believes all of his decisions were for the team's greater good.

"Honestly, I know Ajit Agarkar quite well, and we also talked during the time of my retirement. I called him and said that I am going to retire, and then he said that he felt it was a personal decision. The fact is that Ajit Agarkar had the responsibility to take a lot of big decisions in this stint; he had to phase out the senior players, it cannot be easy. I was one of the senior players phased out during his tenure, but still by keeping some distance from that I want to say that he has been a very good chairman of selectors. If we look at what all he has done with the team," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

"Many times we always talk from an ego's point of view, or from our personal relationships, but we all make the mistake of not putting ourselves in their shoes. What did Ajit Agarkar do? He was looking for a next-generation team. His responsibility was to make the team win as much as possible, but it was also his responsibility to produce the next line of players. He did not make any mistakes there," he added.

Speaking to Aajtak, Kapil expressed that he feels deeply troubled by what he reads and hears, making it clear that his concern goes beyond cricket or politics.

"I feel very bad. I don't know what he did wrong or what he didn't do," he said. "The report that comes out makes it seem like such a big... not just players, anyone can make a mistake. Such a big Prime Minister should get proper treatment."

Kapil stressed that this was not a comment on the Pakistani legal system, which he openly admitted he doesn't fully understand, but rather a simple human appeal that transcended borders and grudges.

"That was my plea throughout. And I don't know the law," he added.

"I don't know what action is taken against him. I don't know anything, but I know this much: he has been a very big cricketer for his country, and he has been a Prime Minister. So some ethics have to be there. What we hear is not like that, so I feel bad."

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was left out of India’s playing XI for their historic first-ever men’s T20I against Japan in Sano on Tuesday, September 22, leaving Japan captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming disappointed. The 15-year-old batter was part of India’s squad but did not feature in the landmark contest, which was also played as part of the celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

The match, initially scheduled as a full-length T20I, was reduced to five overs per side after rain and a wet outfield disrupted the start. India captain Shreyas Iyer opted to bat after winning the toss, while Japan prepared for a rare opportunity to take on the reigning T20 World Cup champions on home soil.

“I was a little bit disappointed that the 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav (Sooryavanshi) wasn't part of the team sheet today,” Kadowaki-Fleming said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Former India captain Kapil Dev has said Indian cricketers have little choice but to follow the government’s position on interactions with Pakistani players, amid the controversies involving the two countries in cricket.

The comments come after the Indian women’s team refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi following their 72-run win over Sri Lanka in the final. The incident has once again brought the strained sporting relationship between India and Pakistan into focus.

“If the government has taken a decision not to shake hands with Pakistani players, then the players have no choice. In such matters, players will go by what the government says,” Kapil Dev.

Michael Clarke has reignited one of cricket’s biggest debates: Adam Gilchrist vs MS Dhoni. According to Clarke, Gilchrist was the better wicketkeeper, combining superb glovework with explosive batting that could change a game in moments.

Dhoni built his own legendary legacy with lightning-fast stumpings, sharp awareness, calmness under pressure and remarkable consistency behind the stumps.

Both were exceptional in different ways, but purely as wicketkeepers, Clarke believes Gilchrist was ahead of Dhoni. A bold opinion that is sure to divide cricket fans! 🏏🔥

Former cricketer Ravi Ashwin praised Gambhir for stepping out and acknowledging the mistake after Sanju Samson was back among the runs on his return.

"The decision to drop Sanju was wrong. What's so honest about it? That is a fact. Sometimes when you take such a decision, you lose the player, the player's confidence gets broken. But I really love the fact that he came out and admitted his mistake. My feeling is that all the decisions going forward should be taken from this perspective. You should also take the trust factor of the player into account. Then it will be much better," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
