CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography Goa

CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography Goa CSIR-NIO a premier oceanography research laboratory, established on 1 Jan.1966, researches on Chemical, Biological, Geological, Physical,Oceanography.

The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) with its headquarters at Dona Paula, Goa, and regional centres at Kochi, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam, is one of the 37 constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. CSIR-NIO was established on 1 January 1966 following the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) in the 1960s. The institute has since grow

n into a multi-disciplinary oceanographic research institute of international repute. The principal focus of research has been on observing and understanding special oceanographic characteristics of the Indian Ocean. The results have been reported in more than 5000 research articles so far. The major research areas include the four traditional branches of oceanography - biological, chemical, geological/geophysical, and physical – as well as ocean engineering, marine instrumentation and marine archaeology. The institute has numerous state-of-the-art laboratories at its headquarters in Goa as well as the regional centres. It also operates two research vessels RV Sindhu Sankalp (56 m) and RV Sindhu Sadhana (80 m) that are equipped for multidisciplinary oceanographic observations. The institute has a library with 15,000 books and 20,000 back volumes of research journals, making it the best collection of printed literature on ocean sciences in the country. In addition to basic research, the institute also carries out applied research sponsored by the industry. These studies include oceanographic data collection, environmental impact assessment, and modelling to predict environmental impact. The institute also provides consultancy on a number of issues including marine environmental protection and coastal zone regulations. With the largest collection of ocean scientists in the country, and equipped with suitable ocean research infrastructure, CSIR-NIO serves as an advanced centre of education in ocean sciences. It has a School of Oceanography under the Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR). In addition, it is a recognized centre for doctoral research by a large number of universities. There are at present over 100 Junior/Senior Research Fellows (qualified through CSIR/UGC eligibility criterion) pursuing their doctoral studies in the institute. In addition, about 300 undergraduate and postgraduate students pursue their project research at this institute every year.

Proud of you!

It is a matter of immense happiness that at the 37th held in Vilnius, Lithuania, all four members of the Indian team secured medals, including one Gold.

Proud of Bhavyaa Gunwal, Soumil Maity, Nish*t Kalani and Anmol Kumar for their outstanding achievement. Their success reflects the growing scientific talent of India's youth in fields such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Computational Biology.

The achievement also underscores the expanding opportunities in under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, with initiatives such as the BioE3 Policy fostering innovation, research and biomanufacturing in India.

May their accomplishment inspire many more young minds to pursue science and innovation for the nation.

The CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, celebrated The World Ocean Day, on 18 June 2026 at the NIO Auditorium. Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Power & New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, and Member of Parliament, North Goa, was the Chief Guest of the program. The event highlighted the role of the Oceans with significant contributions to human well-being, climate regulation, and biodiversity.

The program commenced with a warm welcome and opening remarks by the Director of CSIR-NIO, Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh.

Sh. Shripad Naik addressed the gathering and stated that “the theme of World Ocean Day reminds us that the ocean is not merely a vast body of water surrounding our land, but it is the very foundation of life on Earth. Oceans regulate climate, absorb carbon dioxide, and generate more than half of the oxygen we breathe, support marine biodiversity, facilitate global trade, and sustain the livelihoods of billions of people worldwide”.

Sh. Naik mentioned that the oceans are undergoing rapid changes due to climate change, ocean warming, sea-level rise, deoxygenation, marine pollution, and ocean acidification. These challenges directly affect coastal communities, fisheries, coral reefs, mangroves, and marine biodiversity. Addressing these challenges requires robust scientific understanding, long-term observations, advanced technologies, and innovative solutions. Institutions like CSIR-NIO are at the forefront of this effort”.

He concluded by stating that “We must collectively work towards reducing marine pollution, protecting coastal habitats, conserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable fisheries, and strengthening climate resilience. Every citizen has a role to play in safeguarding our oceans”.

Earlier during the program, the Hon’ble minister distributed Prize and certificates to the winners of the competitions organized as a part of World Ocean Day celebrations.

Ms. Falak Shaheen from SETHU Group proposed the vote of thanks and Chief Scientist Dr. Judith Gonsalves compered the program.

The program was organised by the SETHU group.

On the occasion of World Oceans Day 2026, CSIR–National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR–NIO), Goa in association with Ocean Society of India and Goa Forest Department, organized a Mangrove Walk and Cleanup Activity at the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary mangrove area, Chorao, Goa, on 6 June 2026 in the august presence Shri NKS Chauhan, Officer on Special Duty, Chief Minster Office, UP.

The event was conducted to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and coastal ecosystems and to promote environmental stewardship among the public. Through this programme, participants gained a better understanding of the ecological significance of mangrove ecosystems and their close connection with healthy oceans.

A large number of scientists, staff members, research scholars, students, project personnel, and volunteers from CSIR–NIO enthusiastically participated in the event. The participants undertook a guided mangrove walk followed by a cleanup drive in and around the sanctuary area. Significant quantities of plastic waste and other litter were collected and removed, contributing to the conservation of this ecologically sensitive habitat.

The programme reflected CSIR–NIO's commitment to ocean literacy, environmental conservation, and community engagement. The enthusiastic participation and collective efforts of all involved served as a reminder that protecting our oceans and coastal ecosystems is a shared responsibility and an essential step towards ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
