St. John College, Department of English Celebrates Literature Appreciation Day 2026
The Department of English, St. John College hosted its annual Literature Appreciation Day on September 30, centering around the theme “Folklore and Literature. Embracing world folklore and literary traditions, students brought timeless stories to life by dressing up as iconic characters from Japanese folklore, Chinese folklore, European literature, and Greek mythology, to name a few.
Delivering the keynote address, Administrative Head Mr. Peter Banks reflected on the profound nature of traditional stories. He noted that the purpose of folklore goes far beyond mere entertainment, serving instead as a tool to make sense of a world we do not fully understand.
Drawing from his childhood on a small island in Scotland, Mr. Banks shared personal reflections on how his community interacted with the surrounding ocean, a force that both sustained and claimed lives. He spoke about how local folklore helped generations articulate the deep connection between the land and the sea.
“Folklore is powerful for the knowledge it gives us,” he remarked, adding that, “Literature takes some of those ideas and expands beyond, allowing us to imagine possibilities.”
The vibrant program featured several presentations, including an enthralling performance of the Naga folklore, “Naginimora” by the college Drama Club, dramatic reading of Bram Stoker’s, “Dracula” by the students of English Department and a colorful character parade showcasing student participants in literary attire, introducing themselves.
The celebration concluded with the presentation of an award for the Best Dressed Character, which was won by Honching Annyuhu of B.A. 5th Semester.
Event photography and videography were expertly covered by the Providence Institute of Design and Media, Dimapur.
