As part of an initiative to better understand riverbank erosion and its impacts on vulnerable communities, a team of MSW students from the Centre for Social Work Studies, Dibrugarh University, accompanied by Dr. Monuj Dutta, undertook an Erosion Assessment Survey at Tingkhong Matikota Village, Dibrugarh, on 17 May 2026.

The field study was conducted under the valuable guidance of Dr. Partha Jyoti Das, Professor of Practice, Dibrugarh University, and Director & Head of the Water, Climate and Hazard Division, Aaranyak. The initiative was inspired by his insightful sessions on flood and erosion at the Centre, which motivated students to move beyond classroom learning and engage directly with communities confronting the challenges of riverbank erosion.

The survey aimed to assess the extent and impacts of erosion in the village, document the experiences of affected residents, and develop a deeper understanding of the socio-economic and environmental challenges associated with erosion in the Brahmaputra Valley.

The field exercise provided students with a valuable opportunity to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience, learn participatory assessment techniques, and interact closely with community members. Such experiential learning initiatives play a vital role in nurturing socially responsible professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to disaster risk reduction and community resilience.

We express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Partha Jyoti Das for generously sharing his expertise and guiding the students throughout the field assessment. His mentorship made the exercise both intellectually enriching and socially meaningful, while reinforcing the importance of field-based engagement in addressing environmental and developmental challenges.

The Centre for Social Work Studies, Dibrugarh University, in collaboration with the DRR Club, Dibrugarh University, organized a One-Day Workshop on “Water, Climate & Disaster Resilience” on 16 May 2026.

A major highlight of the workshop was an engaging and thought-provoking session by Dr. Partha Jyoti Das, Professor of Practice, Dibrugarh University, on “Riverbank Erosion as a Disaster: Causes, Impacts and Management in the Brahmaputra River Valley, Assam.” Drawing upon his extensive research and field experience, Dr. Das offered valuable insights into the intricate interplay between river dynamics, climate change, disaster risks, and community resilience in the Brahmaputra Basin.

Dr. Das is a renowned environmental scientist and currently serves as the Director and Head of the Water, Climate and Hazard Division at Aaranyak, one of India’s leading environmental research and conservation organizations. With more than two decades of experience in interdisciplinary research on water, climate, hazards, and socio-ecological systems in Northeast India, he has made significant contributions to advancing knowledge and informing policy and practice in the region.

The session provided participants with a deeper understanding of riverbank erosion as not merely a geomorphological process but a complex socio-environmental disaster with far-reaching implications for livelihoods, displacement, development, and sustainability. It also underscored the critical importance of scientific research, community-based approaches, and informed policy interventions in fostering disaster-resilient societies.

The workshop served as a valuable platform for students, researchers, and practitioners to engage with contemporary challenges related to water, climate change, and disaster risk reduction, while learning from one of the foremost experts working on these issues in the Brahmaputra Valley.

Professor Partha Jyoti Das, Professor of Practice, Dibrugarh University; Director and Head, Water, Climate and Hazards Division, Aaranyak, Guwahati, visited the Center for Atmospheric Studies, Dibrugarh University during 12-21 May, 2026. He had several interactive sessions with the research scholars and faculty members of the Center and the Department of Physics on various aspects of communicating results of scientific research through publications. During the interactive session, he shared valuable insights into the process of writing effective, implication and application-oriented scientific papers and highlighted the importance of understanding research from the perspectives of reviewers, readers, and policymakers. He emphasized the need for clarity, originality, and proper scientific communication while preparing research manuscripts. Professor Das also discussed why conducting research on niche environmental issues of Northeast India is highly important, particularly given the region's unique physiographic, ecological, climatic, and geostrategic characteristics. He pointed out that despite its global significance, Northeast India remains comparatively underexplored due to limited datasets, fewer inter and trans-disciplinary researchers, and inadequate research infrastructure, creating a major research gap in climate sciences. The interaction motivated the scholars to undertake scientifically significant, socially relevant, and region-focused research that can contribute to both scientific understanding, people’s well being and regional development. Further, he had a thorough discussion with the chairperson and the faculty of the center and the department on the introduction of courses in climate studies, the organization of a symposium, and the submission of multiple research project proposals to various national and international funding agencies.
