Rules for Using Articles in English
Articles in English are of two types:
1. Indefinite Articles: A and An
2. Definite Article: The
---
Indefinite Articles: A and An
1. "A" is used before words starting with a consonant sound.
Example:
A book
A car
A university (though "university" starts with a vowel, it begins with a /ju:/ sound, which is a consonant sound)
2. "An" is used before words starting with a vowel sound (A, E, I, O, U).
Example:
An apple
An hour (silent "h" so it starts with a vowel sound)
An umbrella
Usage Rules for Indefinite Articles:
General Reference: Used when referring to something non-specific or when the listener/reader doesn't know which exact one is meant.
Example: I need a pen (any pen, not a specific one).
Professions: Used before professions.
Example: She is a doctor. He is an engineer.
One of many: Used when referring to something as one of a group.
Example: He is a teacher in this school.
---
Definite Article: The
"The" is used to refer to something specific or something that has already been mentioned or is already known to both the speaker and listener.
Usage Rules for The:
1. Before something specific: Used when both the speaker and the listener know which particular person or thing is being talked about.
Example: The sun rises in the east. (The sun is specific and unique.)
2. When something has been mentioned before: Used when the noun has already been introduced.
Example: I saw a dog. The dog was barking loudly.
3. Before superlatives: Used before adjectives like "best", "worst", "highest", etc.
Example: He is the best player in the team.
4. Unique things: Used before things that are one of a kind.
Example: The Earth, the moon, the sky.
5. Before ordinal numbers: Used before "first", "second", "third", etc.
Example: He was the first person to arrive.
