A Light That Never Went Out: Banahatti’s Story of Hope

Back in 2012, BDSSS opened a small tuition centre in Banahatti. The idea was simple: every kid deserves a shot at learning and moving forward.

Time moved on, and the project formally wrapped up in 2021. But the heart of it all - the lessons, the care and that quiet, stubborn commitment to children's futures - didn’t just vanish.

Take Vinay Alaknoor, for example.

Vinay grew up in a family that didn’t have much. His dad wasn’t working, and his mom worked nonstop just to keep food on the table. Vinay wanted to help, so every day, he went from house to house - a hundred homes - fetching water. He’d earn Rs.100 a day.

And through it all, he still found time to study.

For Vinay, the BDSSS tuition centre was more than a classroom. It was a place where people actually saw him, cheered him on and believed in his future - maybe even before he fully believed in himself. That kind of support sticks.

Year by year, he built up his basics, stayed focused and just kept going, no matter how tough things got.

Now, he’s scored a jaw-dropping 97% in his PUC exams.

But let’s be clear: it’s not just about the number. It’s about the years spent pushing through, a kid who refused to quit and a community that stood by him until he made it.

The project ended, but its light didn’t fade.

Because when you really back a child, that hope you plant just keeps growing - long after the final bell rings.

Thank you Kindernothilfe E.V. for making our lives easier and successful.

The Saathi Children’s Project keeps pushing for stronger child protection by getting the entire community involved.

This month, Police officers joined a training session designed to boost their understanding of child rights, especially under POCSO. More than 100 officers made time in their busy schedules to show up and actively join the conversation about protecting kids.

The Director led a session for 30 office bearers of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), diving into major rights violation in our work areas and the bigger goals connected to keeping the project sustainable. They talked through identifying and tackling child rights violations and made sure everyone knew about the BDSSS tuition classes available for children. Before wrapping up, the Director requested the office bearers to stay alert and quickly report any child rights violations to BDSSS, so nobody slips through the cracks.

We thank Kindernothilfe E.V. for their fantastic support.

St. Ann’s High School, Hubli, joined hands with BDSSS to mark World Cancer Day, jumping right in to support the Sparsha Cancer Campaign. Students and staff got involved, and you could feel the sense of empathy and community spirit in every part of the day.

The program made something clear: cancer isn’t just a personal battle. When one person is diagnosed, their whole family feels it - emotionally, financially and in so many other ways. That’s why awareness, early detection and coming together as a community makes such a difference.

What really stood out? The students, around the year, didn’t just celebrate birthdays with cakes or token gestures. They wanted to help for real. Therefore, they started collecting money in the BDSSS donation boxes and raised Rs. 33,000, showing what value-based learning looks like when it jumps off the page and into real life. It’s proof that schools can raise not just smart students, but also kind and socially responsible people.

Hats off to the school management and staff for leading the way and inspiring students to care about something bigger than themselves. Their support gave the Sparsha Cancer Campaign a strong boost and sent a clear message: when we work together, we can make a real impact.

BDSSS truly appreciates St. Ann’s High School, Hubli, for standing alongside and being an active partner in the fight against cancer.

Raising leaders and change-makers!😀

The Saathi Children’s Project, with support from Kindernothilfe E.V., held a lively session all about building up children as leaders in their own communities.

The children got a real chance to learn about their rights, pick up leadership skills and find their voices on issues they care about. The BDSSS team ran the show, and Asst. Director Fr. Arun Fernandes brought energy and insight that made the whole thing click.

Big thanks to Coordinator A. B. Pathan, too - his planning and commitment really pulled everything together.

When we empower kids, everyone benefits. We’re growing a new generation of confident, informed leaders - right from the ground up. Stay tuned for more updates!

World Cancer Day - 4th February

Since 2019, the Sparsha Cancer Campaign has been at the heart of what Belgaum Diocesan Social Service Society (BDSSS) does. We’ve stood by communities, raising awareness, pushing for prevention and offering early support in the fight against cancer.

Today’s World Cancer Day, and honestly, our commitment hasn’t wavered. With our partners, volunteers and health professionals, we’re out here spreading hope, care and the importance of early action.

Cancer isn’t just a medical issue. It’s something we all have to face together.

Let’s join hands. Let’s look out for each other. Let’s work toward a society that’s healthier and more informed.

When we stick together, we save lives. We give families the courage to keep going.

Happy New Year, everyone! God bless!

These images are from the WEP team's recent visit to the Taluka Okkuta (federation) in Chikodi, where they had a productive conversation and worked together.

Enhancing work procedures, exchanging best practices and bolstering long-term models for women's empowerment were the main goals of the visit. The visit was genuinely enriching due to the inspiring interactions, shared realities and shared goals.

We express our gratitude to all of the women for their participation.

A Well-Deserved Break in Mysuru!

After days of hectic fieldwork, planning, deadlines and long hours, our staff finally hit pause for a refreshing one-day team trip to Mysuru - and what a rejuvenating day it was! 😄

From laughter-filled moments to quiet reflections, this short escape gave everyone a much-needed breather, renewed energy and stronger team bonding. Sometimes, the best way to do better work is to simply slow down together for a while.

Fresh minds. Happy hearts. Back to work with new renewed energy!

As every year, the WEP project in Chikodi conducted the Children’s Gram Sabha this November with enthusiastic participation from children, parents, teachers and community members.

The children confidently voiced their concerns, dreams and rights, while parents raised key child-rights-related issues - from education and safety to health and cyber-security. It was heartening to see young voices being heard and respected in a space that truly belongs to them.

That's what BDSSS stands for - children's right to participate. Thank you for the support rendered by our donors and partners.
