अगले दिन टीचर
क्लास में सब बच्चों से
पूछती है.
क्या कोई बच्चा मिट्टी लाया?
सारे बच्चे खामोश रहते हैं...
एक बच्चा उठकर
टीचर के पास जाता है
और कहता है,
लीजिये मैडम,
मैं लाया हूँ स्वर्ग से
मिट्टी..!
टीचर उस बच्चे को
डांटते हुए कहती है;
मुझे बेवकूफ़ समझता है..
कहाँ से लाया है ये
मिट्टी..?

From last couple of days, a lot of us have not been able to get a proper good nights’ sleep fearing that one of our sister, daughter or friend might have met Nirbhaya like fate at Dharamshala. The news started figuring on social media on Monday, May 18 and soon spread like wild fire on Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter. Last week, a girl (not a student of Dharamshala College) had complained to the Principal of Dharamshala Degree College that her sister was being troubled by three to four college students. According to the Principal, she had asked the girl to submit a written complaint, but the girl never appeared again.

It was portrayed that the case was very high profile and the police is trying to conceal it to please its political masters. Even some names started surfacing and the son of a senior minister from Dharamshala , with a couple of more local influential names were accused. I was one of the recipients of such rumour, and confronted the sender by telling him that the alleged minister has no son – just a teenage daughter. To my astonishment, I started getting another message stating that it was minister’s nephew and not of his son. This also meant the information I conveyed had reached the originator of the whatsapp message.

With over 4500 friends on Facebook, I saw almost half of my friends living in Himachal writing about the high profile Dharamshala r**e case accusing the Government for sheltering the accused, the police for concealing facts and the media for being incompetent. Many of my friends attacked me for being a part of a callous system. Some political outfits marched protests against the Government for being ineffective – when I talked to some of protestors, their source of information was also Facebook.

On the next day, a news column appeared on two Hindi newspapers about the same incident further triggering the ongoing speculations. Superintendent of Police, Kangra issued a statement asking people to come forward and help them in the case (if there was any) and requesting people not to believe in any false information. Police also admitted that the sole source of information was social media and the alleged girl who had complained to Dharamshala College Principal.

Yesterday, on May 20 the whole episode took many new and sad turns. First, the senior minister from Dharamashala had to issue a statement that he had no son and just a 4 year old nephew. He requested that his name should not be dragged in the controversy unnecessarily. He also pledged to help the victim and stand for the truth till his last breath. The malicious campaign on social media had forced the minister to issue such statement. The police also under pressure from social media registered an FIR against unknown, and formed an SIT to probe the case.
By late last night, the facebook and whatsapp posts also intensified. Some claimed that the victim is no more and passed away in IGMC Shimla, while others claimed that she died at RPGMC, Tanda. People even started posting pictures of her tortured and injured. There is no account of any such death in both the hospitals or any other hospital till now.

I request to the people of Himachal Pradesh not to post information on social media and whatsapp that is not coming from a credible or a confirmed source. Such posts will only add to more tension and fear in the minds of people. If there is a wrong doing at all, truth cannot be hidden for long. The perpetrators will be brought to justice - I personally cannot believe that such a cruel case cannot be hidden in a state like ours. But, if this all turns out to be a rumour, the people responsible for it must be brought to task. There is an indentified army of people who are sending this false information across several groups.

Things should become much clearer by the evening when the police traces and presents the complainant person, whose sister is being indicated as the victim here.

There are a few possibilities we can discuss here. One of them is that the gangr**e did happen and the college authorities and the police and media are acting under the influence of high profile families of the culprits.
