HISTORY
The Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959 led to the mass genocide of Tibetan people. In the aftermath of this genocide, around 100,000 refugees followed His Holiness the Dalai Lama int

o exile. Among them were thousands of orphans and destitute children ravaged by war, hunger and the psychological devastation of losing their families, homes and country. His Holiness the Dalai Lama promptly recognized that the future of Tibet and its people depended upon the coming generation. With this in mind, and out of concern for the suffering of so many children, His Holiness proposed that a special center be established for them. Thus was born a transit children's care center under the name "Nursery for Tibetan Refugee Children". Tsering Dolma Takla (elder sister of the Dalai Lama) directed its work until her untimely death in 1964. Thereafter, her younger sister Mrs. Jetsun Pema took over the directorship of the nursery. Under her leadership, TCV made tremendous progress and developed into an integrated community registered under the Societies' Act as 'Tibetan Children's Village' (TCV. Today TCV is a selfcontained integrated community with family homes for children, schooling facilities, vocational training centers and teachers' training center. By mid 1970's TCV has expanded its work to different parts of India to include three more Children's Villages, five residential schools, eight dayschools, ten day-care centers, a technical school, and two youth hostels. Thousands of children received education, family life and love through TCV. Today we look after over 15,000 needy children. Even with so much progress, there is still much work to be done as thousands of Tibetans continue to flee the persecution in their homeland. Parents still feel compelled to give up their children by the pervasive sense of hopelessness in Tibet, where educational opportunities for Tibetan children are extremely poor. There the school system is used to suppress the cultural identity of Tibetan children by teaching in Chinese and denigrating the Tibetan language and culture. We need your support in this work of giving a meaningful live and education to our children and to give them "a home away from home".
