Committed to learning and sharing about Indigo, we have curated this super special workshop exploring all the life stages of the colour; from farming, harvest, extraction, making and maintaining vats to a dyed product, over three immersive days in Jaipur.

Get hands-on experience in extracting the pigment from the leaves of Indigofera Tinctoria, making all-natural vats and trying some innovative resist dyeing techniques. Be amazed at and empower yourself with knowing how many avatars this mystic blue takes before it reaches a wardrobe!

Indigo : Transformations

Glimpses of our indigo pigment extraction workshop conducted in Jaipur from the last harvest of 2024.

We had two crops of Indigofera Tinctoria to study; one grown at our farm in Punjab and the other growing wild in outlining regions of Jaipur. This mesmerising metamorphosis of indigo is one-of-its kind.

Our farming mentor Brij Ballabh Udaiwal hosted and conducted the extraction process at his studio Shilpi Sansthan in the outskirts of Jaipur. Our founding director Sukhraj Singh shared with the participants the process of making a fructose vat and dip dyeing, while our mind mentor Yunus Khimani demonstrated painting with indigo paste.

It was an experience of great learning as for the first time we did the process in December with the cold setting in, and yet we got a great amount of pigment.

In attendance were members from Indenium batches, artists, faculty from Delhi University and some very eager learners of indigo.

The more we seek, the more indigo reveals, after all, who is a seeker without a curious heart 💙🌿

1. Handful of pure indigo pigment extract.
2. Identifying and observing Indigofera Tinctoria growing in the wild.
3. Brij ji sharing key identifying features of wild indigo.
4. Happy participants with wild indigo plants and our crop from Punjab.
5. Discussions about immersion of harvested leaves.
6. Fermenting leaves having released Indican into the water, and removal of leaves.
7. The gentle process of aeration.
8. Discussions about the aeration process.
9. Dark teal water after aeration.
10. Indigo pigment settled at the bottom of the vessel.
11. Final pigment paste and pure indigo after drying of the paste.
12. Making a fructose vat with the extracted indigo.
13. -15. Enthusiastic dyeing explorations with the vat.
14. 12 shades from 12 dips in the vat.
