Does Desperation Have to be Stretched to the Point of Vulnerability?
Finding a graduate without a job in the Oil & Gas Industry is rarely uncommon these days owing to the sharp plunge in on-campus placements. This situation, inextricably intertwined with the students' long-held ambitions to make it big time working in the industry, leads to desperation for jobs. Trying to get an opening in the lowest of ranks as a foothold seems a plausible option to many graduates, so they can achieve higher positions with their dedication. However, stretching this desperation of landing a job to the point of being vulnerable and hence duped by deceitful scams is certainly imprudent on the part of graduates. These fraudulent businesses do not give a second thought to readily trading graduates' desperation for their profit.
Let us delve into a few possible scenarios which have deceived people in the industry:
• Transfer of a minimal amount such as Rs. 1500 to their travel guide for work permit in some foreign country, once they have sent you the confirmation letter. One may not address the gravity of being deceived for such a minimal amount, however this psychology makes it more feasible in this evolving industry.
• As for some of them try to mask their fraud behind inviting the candidates to reputed 5 star hotels such as The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai for personal interview. Such banquet bookings are investments to lure you into transferring a sum up to Rs. 2 lakh
Looking into a few details about the company will save your valuable time and help expose fraudsters:
• Google the domain name of the email address from which you received the job opening. Companies signing up for free domain names are likely to be fake ones. It could also be possible that they are registered on paid basis for which you may check the date at which the domain name is created, like if you receive an email from “.com” and it’s a fake domain, it must have been created just a few months back.
• Confirm with the headquarters of the respective company.
There are many such job opening available on Facebook groups and pages, so don’t fall for them. There are some decent consultancies which offer jobs for one month salary from your pay but an advance payment should never be demanded nor encouraged.
P.S. Thanks Shishir Choudhary and Abhishek Agarwal for your contribution.
