Shri Ram fights for human values, while Shri Krishna fights for humanity itself.
If Shri Ram is righteousness, then Shri Krishna is the establishment of righteousness.

Every human journey begins with Ram, and "time" turns them into Krishna. It is as necessary for a person to become Krishna as it is to be Ram, but the journey that begins with Ram remains incomplete until it concludes with Krishna.
