The History of the Institution—Shiksha Sabha Madhya Vidyalaya
The hot days of summer were no more. One evening a happy band of youths of the local Panda families sat down to discuss about the sad future lot of their young brothers. The modern materialistic ideas dawned all on a sudden in the spiritualistic minds of these youths. They talked about the educa
tional progress of the world, and then began to compare the same with that of their own place. They saw that only one institution (Local High English School) could scarcely meet the deficiency of the inhabitants of the place. Bengali was the principal vernacular of the school at town. Hindi was being totally neglected. The local students were in a difficulty to have even some elementary knowledge of their mother tongue. The said youths realized the truth. They made up their minds to start a Hindi primary school to spread Hindi in their town. The new idea was put in action on the22nd. Day of November, 1918; and the ‘Panda Shiksha sabha L.P. School opened its doors for the Hindi knowing boys of the locality. The members of the Shiksha sabha began to subscribe whatever they could spare and met the bare necessary expenditure of the institution. Gradually the institution began to attract the sympathy of the intelligentsia and the elite of the town; and march triumphantly on its way. The District inspector of Schools, for its improvement, submitted two schemes one after another in the year 1919-20 and 1920-21 to the local municipal Board, but it was in vain. Now realizing the need of a well managed U.P. School the members raised its standard to an U.P. School in the year 1921 and began to drag its progressive chord somehow. This year the District Inspector of Schools recognized this as a U.P. School and encouraged the members in their noble aspirations. Fortunately this time this institution drew the attention of a local gentleman named Babu Baijnath Jhunjhunwala who began to serve this since then with unflinching sympathy and love. He intimated the miserable financial condition of the school to a well known rich merchant of Calcutta and succeeded in persuading him to pay a visit to this poor institution in 1923. Rai Bahadur Sedmul Dalmia saw the management of the school and found it working to the satisfaction of the local needs. And he agreed to render every possible help whenever needed. The managing committee in return named the institution as ‘ Hargobind Rai Dalmia Siksha Sabha School’ to commemorate the name of the patron’s uncle; and showed its gratitude to its selfless patron. In the year 1924 the municipal Board found this institution in more flourishing condition than the then managed U.P. School and recognized as the only U.P. But it was regrettable that the Board did not take steps to ameliorate its pecuniary condition. Up till now education was imparted in Hindi alone, and so the ex-students of this school were could not secure their admission in the high School for their secondary education. Seeing the difficulty the patron arranged for teaching English in the year 1925; and the Divisional Inspector sanctioned the same on 16.5.1925. In the year 1926, the school made a still more progress. The members with the kind permission of the patron opened M.E. classes and applied for its recognition as a Middle English School. Fortunately the Divisional Inspector of Schools and the District Inspector of Schools visited the school on the 22nd of August, 1926 and recognized it as a Middle English School. The School was recognized in 1.9. 1926 and in 1927 eight boys were sent up for the U.S.C. examination out of which four passed. Three secured Distinction and one was awarded an M.E. In 1928 17 boys were sent up , out of which 13 were successful and one secured scholarship. In 1929 16 boys were sent up, out of which 9 passed. As usual one secured scholarship. Building:
o The school was started in a rented house. From the very beginning the organizers of the school were anxious to provide the school with a suitable house. For this purpose they approached the wealthy visitors of the place and the local municipality, but none came to render them any help. By the grace of Almighty Roy Bahadur Sedmal Dalmia visited the school . The organizers became assured that in near future the school would be supplied with a building of its own. They were from this time in search of a suitable house in the locality which was to be sold. But a house which would remove the want of accommodation was not to be found in the neighborhood of the houses of boys. The managing committee then resolved to apply to authorities concerned for a suitable site for this purpose. About this time the recent building was to be sold in auction. The representatives of e Patron Babu Baijnath Jhunjhunwala at once went to to the --- and purchased it at Rs. 12,000.( Rupees Twelve thousand) only. There were a good deal of litigation regarding this and after a year he got possession of this on the 7th of February and from that time the school is being held in the building. This is spacious enough to accommodate all the classes. There are rooms in the school building where students and teachers reside. Thus the generous patron removed the long felt want of this institution.
