The School of Design at Ambedkar University pursues Design and Inclusiveness as related and complementary endeavors. Product Design and Service Design?
The MDes Program in Social Design in Ambedkar University commenced in 2012. It was the first Social Design program in South Asia at the time of its inception. This was also the first time a School of Design was imbedded in a Social Sciences and Humanities university. Over a period of nearly nine years, the program grew significantly in terms of experience. As of today seven batches of Social Desig
ners have passed through the program. The emphasis in the program, at the broadest level, is on design as a socially inclusive vocation. Different design practitioners, architects and academics teach at the school and the course offerings can be varied. The curricular framework involves studios related to Design Process, Service Design and Systems Design. In what ways does the mandate of social inclusion impact such contemporary modes of skilling such as UiUx. Similarly, how can we imagine inclusion in the context of such analytical frameworks of thinking as Systems Design, Urban Design, Policy Studies, Space Studies and law? The school attempts to find answers to these questions through its pedagocial models. The projects of the students from the school have ranged between exploring more inclusive forms of education, waste management and e-waste segregation, homelessness, urban gardening, wayfinding in cities, promoting the Chakma script, the future of work, health-care delivery, disability access.., to name a few. Former students are now employed in positions and roles in the design industry and academia, both nationally and internationally.
