Did you know that the correct knowledge of syllables is important to make spellings easier?
A relatively easier concept to teach, a syllable is defined as “a letter or combination of letters, uttered together or at a single effort.” Rule of thumb - every syllable contains a vowel!
Once students recognize syllables in a word and are able to say one syllable at a time, spelling becomes much easier. For example, the word ‘reading’ has two syllables: read + ing. The word ‘blue’ has one syllable: blue.
Another trick we use to count the number of syllables in a word is to put your hand under your chin while speaking. The number of times your jaw drops is the number of syllables in a word.
