Chancellor of Ashoka University and, with his full-time teaching appointments, a storyteller to enthralled students. His classes animate historical fact with humanising insight into key personalities, routinely garnering standing ovations at the end of courses. Mukherjee deftly embodies his own injunction that “the historian’s craft demands more than delightful storytelling.”

A self-described ‘compulsive visitor’ of art galleries around the world, Professor Mukherjee is an internationally acclaimed historian and is regarded as the foremost word on the rebellion of 1857. His first book, Awadh in Revolt (1984) has become standard reference on the subject.

Join him as he narrates how Modern India emerged, not without contradictions, through the life and work of certain key individuals ranging from Ram Mohan Roy to Jawaharlal Nehru.

Entombed in eight walls, I revel in the grandeur surrounding me, but to what avail?
I lived a life of luxury, in the magnificient palaces, cocooned in silk and finest of clothes, but to what avail?
Now they hearken me as a man with an octagonal tomb, one of a kind.
My deeds are razed by the hands of time.
Remember me in life, nay!
Remember me in death? So it goes.
To no avail.
