UPSC Current Affairs – Why Are Sugar Prices Rising?
Why are sugar prices rising, and what does it tell us about agriculture, inflation and energy policy? The recent rise in sugar prices is linked to lower domestic production, crop damage, festive demand and tightening global supplies. In Uttar Pradesh, Red Rot disease and Top Shoot Borer affected sugarcane, while excessive rainfall and waterlogging in major producing states reduced sucrose recovery. Production estimates fell from around 343 LMT to nearly 306 LMT. Global supply concerns, including weather disruptions in Brazil, further added pressure. The issue also highlights the food security vs energy security debate around the E20 ethanol-blending target. Government measures included duty-free imports of up to 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar, stock limits and early crushing-season measures. A highly relevant topic for UPSC Prelims and GS Paper III.
