National Dengue Day: 5 tips to prevent the mosquito-borne disease and keep yourself safe
Remove any stagnant water
Water from coolers, containers, buckets, etc. that is stored and stagnant should be cleaned and removed every once a week. The mosquitoes that spread the dengue virus breed in such water. Having such containers of water around the house can increase your chances of getting the dengue infection. You must keep all such containers covered with lids, to reduce the risk of breeding mosquitoes.
Cover your hands and legs
The season for transmission of dengue is mostly rainy or monsoon season. You must wear clothing that covers your hands and legs during this time to avoid mosquito bites and spread of dengue. You can also apply mosquito repellent gels and creams to repulse mosquitoes from your skin and keep them from biting you.
Use mosquito nets at night
At night, you must use some sort of preventive measure against mosquito bites. While you can use mosquito repellent sprays in the room, they are uncomfortable for some people and can cause breathing issues. Using mosquito nets to keep the mosquitoes away is a good way to prevent the spread of dengue.
Keep wet garbage separate and covered
You must segregate the waste from the house into wet and dry, especially during the season of transmission of dengue. This will prevent the growth and breeding of mosquitoes. Make sure you discard the wet waste from the house in a bin that is kept covered.
Keep patients safe
Not only is it important to stay safe and prevent dengue, one preventive measure of dengue is to keep the dengue patients safe from mosquito bites. If mosquitoes bite dengue patients and then bite someone who is not infected with the virus, it can lead to spreading of the disease and its transmission to other people.
