A simple vending machine in Staten Island has become part of New York City's public health system. đź’™ On June 29, 2026, city officials unveiled new health vending machines in Port Richmond, providing New Yorkers with free access to wellness supplies and the life-saving overdose reversal medication naloxone, available 24 hours a day. According to the NYC Health Department, residents can use the machines by entering a valid New York City ZIP code.

The initiative expands on a citywide program launched in Brooklyn and Queens in 2023. City officials say those machines have been used more than 70,000 times and have distributed thousands of naloxone kits, which can reverse opioid overdoses. Health officials have also reported a significant decline in overdose deaths on Staten Island since 2023.

At first glance, it looks like someone pulling a wheeled cooler along the sidewalk on a hot summer day—nothing that would seem unusual.

Then you notice a dog sitting comfortably inside, taking in the view as the cooler rolls along.

It wasn't done for attention.

The pavement was simply too hot for the dog's paws.

In places like Arizona, asphalt can become much hotter than the surrounding air, reaching temperatures capable of burning a dog's paw pads within seconds during extreme heat.

Rather than risk the walk, the owner came up with a simple solution using something they already had.

The video made many people smile, but it also served as a reminder of how easy it is to overlook how hot the ground can be when we're wearing shoes.

Sometimes, a small adjustment is all it takes to keep a pet safe.

Imagine attempting to rob a 77-year-old woman and ending up with your own head slammed into an ATM instead.

Winifred Peel was using an HSBC cash machine in Bromborough, England, when three young men targeted her. Liverpool Crown Court later heard that the group had traveled from Manchester looking for what they believed would be “easy targets” to rob.

As Peel entered her PIN, one man shoved her while another reached over to withdraw ÂŁ200 from her account. Rather than backing down, she grabbed one of the robbers by the collar and slammed his head against the ATM three times in an effort to stop the theft.

The men ran away, and Peel went inside the bank to report the incident. CCTV footage later helped police identify the suspects, revealing that Felix Stoica was the man she had grabbed. Stoica, Florin Geblescu, and Piper Dumitru all pleaded guilty to robbery.

Stoica, 19, was sentenced to two years in a young offenders’ institution. Geblescu, 18, received an 18-month sentence, while Dumitru, also 18, was sentenced to eight months. The court heard that Dumitru acted as a lookout and drove the group despite being disqualified from driving for dangerous driving.

Peel later said the robbery had a lasting impact on her confidence and changed her life. At the same time, her swift response became widely known as a rare case in which someone the robbers believed would be an “easy target” fought back in a completely unexpected way.
