Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to hire around 500 personnel
Country’s nodal aviation security body BCAS is in the process of hiring around 400-500 personnel, which would help it tide over the acute manpower shortage ahead of India’s aviation safety audit by the UN aviation watchdog ICAO.
Besides, the Finance Ministry has also given its go ahead to the Civil Aviation Ministry to induct 21 personnel at different levels in the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) as well, they said.
The ICAO audit, the third in last nine years, would take place in November this year and cover issues such as aerodrome operations, air traffic control, air navigation and aircraft investigation mechanism.
Revamping of the short-staffed BCAS is one of the key issues the government has to address before the aviation safety audit by the ICAO.
Govt in talks with plane makers to use GAGAN navigation system
The civil aviation ministry is in talks with aircraft manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus to implement the new GAGAN GPS-aided navigation system.
“All new aircraft might come with the GAGAN navigation system, but before that the instrument needs to be standardised… the work is going on,” said officials.
Though aircraft manufacturers are tight-lipped about the discussions, government officials said that if the talks go through, the new aircraft will do away with the radar-based navigation system. Each aircraft will cost at least a couple of crores extra with the new navigation system implemented in it.
However, officials said that mandating implementation of GAGAN in the existing planes owned and operated by carriers might not happen, as it would require grounding of aircraft for quite a long period of time. It would also require supplimental type certificate (which is required if any new instrument is introduced to an already running aircraft), which would further delay the process of implementation in existing aircraft.

Unused Airports Across India to be Operationalised: Civil Aviation Minister
The government wants to develop strategies to operationalise unused airports in the country, civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju has said.
"There are around 31-32 airports in India which are not active today. There is one in Coochbehar (in West Bengal) as well. We want to develop strategies to operationalise them," Mr Raju said after a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
He said the problem in some such airports is that the length of runways do not permit jets and this is where smaller aircrafts need to come into play.
The Chief minister said the state has been assured by the civil aviation minister that the maintenance work of new terminal of Kolkata airport will be completed within a period of 220 days.
There has been complaints of water leakage from the airport, she said adding that the Centre has been requested to complete the work related to Coochbehar airport faster.
