Press Release

Budhal, 22 April 2026

In celebration of Earth Day 2026, the Departments of Geography and Botany of Government Degree College (GDC) Budhal jointly organised an awareness programme-cum-lecture on the *“Importance of Sacred Groves”* within the college campus.
The programme was designed to highlight the ecological, cultural, and spiritual significance of sacred groves—patches of forest traditionally protected by local communities due to religious beliefs and cultural practices. These groves serve as vital reservoirs of biodiversity and play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance.
The event commenced with a formal welcome address by the Head of the Department of Geography, Miss Akssa Khatoon, who underscored the relevance of Earth Day and the urgent need to conserve natural ecosystems. The extension lecture was delivered by Dr. Gowhar Ahmad Shapoo, Lecturer in the Department of Botany, who elaborated on the role of sacred groves in conserving rare and endemic plant species, protecting soil and water resources, and sustaining traditional ecological knowledge.
He further highlighted the traditional conservation ethics practiced in regions like Jammu and Kashmir, where sacred landscapes have long contributed to environmental preservation. The lecture encouraged students to recognise the value of indigenous conservation systems and integrate them with modern environmental approaches.
Students actively participated in the programme, engaging in meaningful discussions and sharing their perspectives on environmental conservation. The event concluded with a collective pledge to protect nature and promote sustainable practices in daily life.
