Vishleshan invites you to 'Finance Capital and the Nature of Contemporary Capitalism in India' , a lecture by Dr CP Chandrasekhar on Wednesday, the 29th of March.

The lecture will be followed by the launch of Aapoorti, 2017 - - the annual Economics Journal of Miranda House.

Time: 12:30 PM. Audience members are requested to be seated by 12:20 PM

Venue: Room 248

Open to MH students only.

About the topic:

The term ‘emerging markets’ was coined in 1991 by a bunch of economists from the private lending arm of the World Bank in order to excite investors into the possibility of investing in the markets of the Global South. Today the term is used almost synonymously with ‘developing economies’. Does India’s position as an emerging market for foreign investment automatically translate into its macroeconomic development? After the ages of industrial, commercial and managerial capital, the current age of finance capital provides a sweeping global canvas for situating and understanding the current state of the Indian economy – from the sunrise start-up culture to the Big Bad Banking problem of Non-Performing Assets.

Introducing our esteemed panelists: Dr. Jayati Ghosh and Dr. Surjit Bhalla

Globalisation is under attack and it has long faced criticism from the left for being divisive and undemocratic. Around the world, increasing inequality has manifested into strong political forces. The rise of Trump and vote on Brexit are symbols of society pushing back against globalisation, a shout of rage from those who feel that it has brought them precious little.

But globalisation of some sort is here to stay, whether we like it or not. It must be acknowledged that the competition rising out of free trade has improved quality and provided consumers with more choice. It has pulled many developing countries out of abject poverty and allowed labour to move freely across borders. Countries are much more interconnected today.

However, rising inequality in globalised countries has had people questioning globalisation. Do the pros outweigh the cons? Are there ways to make globalised economic policy more equitable? These are only some of the issues that we hope to address at the opening ceremony of Zenith, the annual economics conclave of Miranda House.

2016 marks 25 years of liberalisation of our country. The economic reforms kick-started in 1991 brought about a transformation in Indian markets, significantly boosting various sectors and improving consumer's choices. However, the issue at hand is not just the success or failure of the reforms, but also issues of sustainability and equity.

To shed light on the topic "Markets, Growth and Social Opportunity: 25 years of economic reforms in India", Arthashastra, the Economics Society, is proud to host Dr. Pulapre Balakrishnan.

Join us on 23 September, 12 noon, at the Seminar Hall. Entry open for all colleges.*
