Here are some fun facts about the French language and culture:
1. French is the official language of 29 countries – It’s spoken across Europe, Africa, North America (Canada), and even the Pacific.
2. It was the official language of England – From 1066 to the 14th century, French was the language of the English court after the Norman conquest.
3. English has borrowed thousands of French words – Around 30% of English words come from French, like “entrepreneur,” “ballet,” and “cul-de-sac.”
4. French doesn’t use “W” often – It mostly appears in borrowed words like “wagon” and “weekend.”
5. The longest French word is “anticonstitutionnellement” – It means “unconstitutionally” and has 25 letters!
6. French was almost the official language of the U.S. – In the late 18th century, there was a (possibly mythological) vote in Congress that narrowly chose English over French or German.
7. The French Academy protects the language – “L’Académie Française” controls what words enter official French, sometimes resisting English influence.
8. French has no word for “seventy,” “eighty,” or “ninety” – Instead, numbers are built using math: soixante-dix (60+10), quatre-vingts (4×20), and quatre-vingt-dix (4×20+10).
9. It’s the language of diplomacy – French is one of the official languages of the UN, the EU, and even the Olympics.
10. French has influenced cuisine worldwide – Terms like sous-chef, soufflé, and cordon bleu are used globally.
