Stepping away from a high salary for an MBA means the stakes are massive. Stop checking rankingsโ€”start with strategy.

Ask Yourself These 5 Questions:

Experience: Under 8 or Over 10 years?
Goal: Hard technical skills, or running a P&L/C-Suite Prep?
Trajectory: Accelerating on current path, or massive industry pivot?
Funding: Company sponsorship (staying) or self-funding (leaving)?
Affordability: Can you step away from your salary for a full year?

Your Strategic Breakdown:
๐Ÿ“ˆ THE PART-TIME MBA

Who: Mid-level Pros (3-8 YOE) breaking into management.
Why: Immediate ROI. Learn on Saturday, deploy on Monday.
Best For: Accelerating on your current path.
Avoid If: You need an industry switch (no summer internship).

๐Ÿค THE EXECUTIVE MBA (EMBA)

Who: Senior Leaders (10-15+ YOE) keeping their day job, eyeing the C-Suite.
Why: You're paying for the room. A high-leverage peer network (VPs, MDs, Founders).
Best For: Executive leap within your current industry.
Avoid If: You want a career pivot.

๐Ÿ‘‘ EXECUTIVE FELLOWS (FULL-TIME)

Who: Highly experienced leaders (10-15+ YOE) willing to step away for 1 intensive year.
Why: Immersive campus ecosystem, profound reflection, global upskilling.
Best For: Massive industry switch, launching a startup, or deep upskilling before taking over the C-Suite.
Top Programs: Stanford MSx, MIT Sloan Fellows, LBS Sloan Masters.

The Verdict:

Mid-level & keeping job? Part-Time.
Senior-level & keeping job? EMBA.
Senior-level & transforming? Executive Fellows Full-Time.

Goal: Secure your M7 seat now, attend later (3-5 years).
The Advantage: Optionality & Safety Net. Lock in a top school (HBS, Wharton) and spend your early 20s taking massive career risks (startups, pivots) without fear. You have the ultimate backup plan.
Who it's for: High-performing seniors with a clear long-term MBA vision.
Key Tip: AdComs look for raw leadership trajectory and high ambition, not polished management experience.

The Advantage: Brand Reset & Elite Recruiting. Itโ€™s a 10-18 month sprint that plugs you into Tier-1 consulting or finance recruiting, instantly legitimizing your profile. (Hello, Chicago Booth MiM!)
Who it's for: Recent grads whose undergrad brand didn't unlock their target elite entry-level roles.
Key Tip: The MiM buys your first elite job, it is NOT a substitute for an MBA later.

1-Year vs. 2-Year MBA: Which is your career accelerator? ๐Ÿš€
The choice isn't just about timeโ€”it's about the transition you need. Use this simple diagnostic to decide if you need Runway (2-Year) or Efficiency (1-Year).

Choose 2-Year if you need RUNWAY:
Major Pivot: Switching industry, function, or geography.
Need an Internship: The summer break is critical for testing a new field and recruiting.
Exploring: You need time and courses to discover your post-MBA direction.
The Advantage: Time to test, recalibrate, and recruit with more room for error.

Choose 1-Year if you need EFFICIENCY:
Clear Direction: You have existing expertise and a defined post-MBA goal.
Accelerate: You want to sharpen, deepen, or slightly redirect your existing path, not reinvent it.
Low Opportunity Cost: Get back to full-time income quickly.
The Advantage: A focused, high-speed education for maximum return on time invested.

๐Ÿ“ The Simple Rule:
If you need the MBA to explore, test, and pivot, choose 2-Year.
If you need the MBA to refine, accelerate, and return to market, choose 1-Year.

NO INTERNSHIPS at INSEAD?
Thats the one INSEAD myth that deserves to be busted!
One of the most common reasons applicants hesitate over INSEAD is - โ€œItโ€™s a one-year MBA, so thereโ€™s no room for internships.โ€ Thatโ€™s not entirely true!
INSEAD has two intakes, August and January. The school states that the almost everything is identical across both, but the January intake includes a two-month summer break, during which students can pursue an internship or other endeavours.

That matters more than many applicants realise.
For career switchers, geography switchers, and especially candidates exploring structured recruiting pathways, that summer break can be strategically important. INSEAD explicitly notes that applicants interested in investment banking are strongly encouraged to consider the January intake, because banks hire full-time roles primarily through their summer associate programmes.
So, ask yourself if the January intake gives you the flexibility you need for my goals?

Because the myth that โ€œINSEAD has no internshipsโ€ often causes applicants to dismiss the school too early, especially those who are trying to pivot functions or industries. In reality, the January intake was designed with a different rhythm, and that rhythm can work very well for candidates who want the option of a summer internship. INSEADโ€™s own student content also shows that internships are a common use of the summer break, particularly for those switching careers or geographies.

So if youโ€™ve been ruling out INSEAD because you assumed a one-year MBA automatically means no internship pathway, it may be time to revisit that assumption.

Every year, I see families do the same thing -> They treat rankings like a scoreboard, and then try to reverse engineer a life decision from a single number.

The problem is that undergrad rankings often measure whatโ€™s easy to quantify, not what matters most for a 17โ€“19-year-old.

So hereโ€™s a simpler way to use them.
A ranking can help you shortlist.
It cannot tell you whether youโ€™ll thrive there.
For undergrad, the โ€œrightโ€ choice is usually a combination of course strength + environment + outcomes + cost.

๐—จ๐—ฆ-๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€ (๐—จ๐—ฆ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜„๐˜€) tend to reward selectivity, graduation outcomes, and reputation surveys. Helpful, but still not a substitute for checking department strength.

UK shortlists are often better built using student and outcomes signals like those in the ๐—ง๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐—ง๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—š๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—š๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ, and then going course-by-course.

๐—ฆ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜-๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€ (๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ) can be surprisingly useful for โ€œday-to-day fitโ€ like campus culture, housing, and student voice, but should never be the final decision-maker.

Finally, use this 4-part filter before you fall in love with a rank
1) Course fit - How strong is the department for your major? How flexible is the curriculum?
2) Outcome fit - What do graduates actually do next? Internships, first jobs, grad school pathways.
3) Environment fit - Will you thrive in the culture and pace? Support systems, community, competition level.
4) Financial fit - Total cost and realistic ROI for your path.

For Women's Day, we celebrate the incredible, multifaceted impact women have on the worldโ€”whether they are building a family, a startup, or a community.

And as a career strategist, I want to take a moment to speak directly to the ambitious women fighting to break through the corporate ceiling. We spend a lot of time on Women's Day talking about breaking the glass ceiling, but not talking about the actual tools required to shatter it.
From my personal experience watching incredible women navigate their careers and advising them through major pivots, I can say this with absolute confidence:
A top-tier MBA is the perfect unfair advantage.

The corporate world can be slow to change. But if you are looking to forcefully accelerate your trajectory, reset your market value, and bypass the broken rung, there has never been a better time to pursue an MBA.
1. The Market Demand is in Your Favor ๐Ÿ“ˆ Top business schools are aggressively actively hunting for the next generation of female leaders. They need you. They want female visionaries who will go on to run industries - this gives you massive leverage in admissions.
2. It is a Sledgehammer to the Glass Ceiling ๐Ÿ”จ The MBA is one of the few structural resets available in the business world. It transitions you from "ex*****on" to "strategy" overnight. More importantly, post-MBA recruiting comes with standardized compensation grids.
3. You Build a Boardroom, Not Just a Network ๐ŸŒ Women are often over-mentored and under-sponsored. An MBA changes that. It surrounds you with a global cohort of peers, alumni, and professors who become your fiercest advocates, investors, and business partners for the rest of your life.

Don't wait. The schools want you. The corporate world needs you.
Claim your space, use your leverage, and go get that unfair advantage. More power to you. ๐Ÿฅ‚

The Financial Times MBA ranking just dropped, and, like clockwork, I am already getting the same questions - โ€œWhy did HBS drop?โ€ "Is IESE actually better than HBS?" โ€œHow is MIT #1 here but #6 elsewhere?โ€

In continuation of my recent posts on demystifying rankings, hereโ€™s the simplest rule -> Donโ€™t look at the rank first. Look at what the ranking is designed to measure. Because these rankings are answering different questions.

One more aspect to consider - Rankings are a snapshot, not a permanent label.

The 5 things I would prioritize to maximize the college experience

Over the years, Iโ€™ve worked with students across undergrad, masterโ€™s, and MBA programs. The pattern is pretty consistent. The students who do well later arenโ€™t necessarily the busiest on campus, or even the ones with the highest grades. Theyโ€™re the ones who make a few smart choices early, then stick with them.

If youโ€™re in college right now, these are the five things Iโ€™d prioritise.
1) Network & Mentors
Not networking as in collecting contacts - build real relationships.
Get to know your peers, seniors, faculty, and alumni. These are the people who will refer you, hire you, fund you, or introduce you to the next opportunity later. Find a few mentors who know you and will back you - a professor, a senior professional or a college senior.

2) Clubs and leadership
Join fewer things. Go deeper.
Pick 1โ€“2 clubs or committees where you can actually take ownership. Run an initiative. Lead a team. Build something people remember.

3) Internships and projects
Try to graduate with proof you can do the work, not just that you studied it.
Internships help. Side projects, research, case competitions, and volunteering with real outcomes help just as much, sometimes more.

4) Skills
Every semester, choose one skill to strengthen.
Writing, speaking, analysis, research, design, data, product thinking. The skill you build quietly now becomes your advantage later.

5) Get uncomfortable on purpose
Donโ€™t spend all of college inside the same group. Same major, same friend circle, same way of thinking. The real value of campus is exposure. Work with people who disagree with you, come from different backgrounds, and think differently. Itโ€™ll sharpen how you communicate, lead, and collaborate.

Your degree will open a door or two.
But what you do outside the classroom will decide how far you go once the door opens.

Missed the Fall 2026 deadlines? You don't have to wait 18 months to start your MBA! โธ๏ธ

If you missed the Round 2 deadlines, the math looks depressing:
Miss Fall 2026 โžก๏ธ Wait for Fall 2027 โžก๏ธ Start school in September 2027. That is a year and a half of "career limbo." ๐Ÿ“‰

But there is a strategic shortcut that top-tier applicants use to save that year: The January 2027 Intake.

This isn't a "backup plan." Itโ€™s a massive arbitrage opportunity. Especially with current US visa uncertainty, the Jan intake opens doors to regions with clearer immigration pathways and faster ROI.

๐Ÿ›‘ A Reality Check:
The Jan intake isn't for everyone.

Just pivoting? Wait for Sept.
Need max US flexibility? Wait for Sept.

Ready to move NOW? Read on.
Top Global Jan 2027 Options:

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ The US & UAE
Columbia Business School: Ivy League speed. 10 months. Perfect for sponsored consultants & family biz.

NYU Abu Dhabi: Full US degree in the gateway to the Middle East.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Europe (Pivot Friendly)
INSEAD: The "Business School for the World" with a full summer internship.
HEC Paris: The "CEO Factory" + internship.

IMD: Leadership bootcamp for experienced pros (Avg age 29+).

IE Business School: Innovation & Entrepreneurship hub.

RSM: Access to the Dutch "Orientation Year" visa.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canada (Stability)
Queenโ€™s (Smith), Ivey, Schulich: Direct pathways to PR and Toronto corporate HQs.

๐ŸŒ Asia (Growth)
SMU: The gateway to Singapore Finance/Consulting.

๐Ÿ’ก The Strategy: How to Choose?
It comes down to one variable: The Internship.

โœ… Choose INSEAD, HEC, or Canada if you are "Transforming" (Switching Industry/Geography). You need the summer internship to de-risk your profile.

๐Ÿš€ Choose Columbia or NYU if you are "Accelerating." You don't need a summer trial; you need the degreeโ€”fast.
