Planning to study in Australia? The latest visa changes could affect how you plan your study journey.

On 17 September 2026, the Australian Government announced a new set of migration measures affecting international students and other temporary visa holders.

Here are the key points students should know:

1. Family members
Most international students and graduate visa holders will no longer be able to add family members to their visas. Exceptions will apply in certain circumstances, including for some Pacific and ASEAN nationals and students undertaking PhD courses. Families already in Australia will not be separated under these changes.

2. Tighter rules around course changes and “visa hopping”
Students changing courses will face additional visa requirements. The government has also announced measures intended to prevent students from moving between courses or visas primarily to extend their stay.

3. Stronger visa compliance
Australia is also strengthening compliance measures for temporary visa holders and overstayers as part of its broader migration policy changes.

New Zealand is expanding post-study work options for international graduates.

From 16 November 2026, eligible graduates will have access to a new 6-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa with open work rights. Post-Study Work Visa eligibility will also expand for certain Level 7 Graduate Diploma graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree.
