Mastering relief art involves mastering your materials, surface prep and curing science.

Nothing more heartbreaking than spending hours sculpting intricate relief patterns, only to return to spiderweb cracks across the surface.

Whether you’re working with modelling paste, sculpture paste or cone piped relief work on canvas and MDF, following these core rules is what turns fragile paste into long lasting sculptural art.

Tree of Life - by Raskrti

I sculpted this massive wall piece as an ode to Tree of Life for a client.

To me, this represents continuity, grounding and quiet strength. The deep roots speak for where we come from and staying anchored while the sprawling branches reach across the wall and reflect growth, ambition and connection.

Bringing this to life at such a massive scale with sculpted cone work allowed each and every detail to have its own dimension and weight.

In person, the shadows shift as the daylight changes, making the tree feel truly alive.

What does Tree of Life evoke in you? Let me know in the comments 👇

Relief art isn’t just something you look at—it’s an art form you *feel*. When paste meets the board, the boundary between painting and sculpture completely disappears.

Here is what creates that distinct power:

The Magic (Sculpting with Natural Light): Unlike flat paintings that remain static, relief art transforms throughout the day. As the sun shifts across a room, the cast shadows stretch, soften, and redefine the artwork’s contours. You aren’t just applying pigment; you are choreographing how ambient light interacts with the room.

The Depth (Breaking Out of Two Dimensions): Raising the surface even by a few millimeters gives the piece architectural presence. The sharp contrast between deep grooves and elevated peaks creates natural chiaroscuro—no shaded paint required, just genuine physical depth emerging from the negative space.

The Texture (The Irresistible Tactile Pull): There is an immediate, instinctive urge to reach out and run your fingers over textured art. Every carved line, wave, and ridge preserves the exact speed, angle, and pressure of the palette knife, freezing human momentum into stone-like permanence.
