Is Psychology a scoring optional for UPSC Civil Service Exam?
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a rigorous journey that aspirants undertake to realize their dreams of serving the nation. One pivotal decision is the selection of an optional subject, and Psychology often remains underestimated. However, the reality is quite the opposite. The success stories of two students from Beautiful Mind IAS Institute, trained by Arun Kumar, serve as compelling evidence.
Akshaya Babu - CSE 2022, Rank 168: A Testament to Psychology's Potential
Akshaya Babu, securing a remarkable 295 marks in CSE 2022, has unequivocally demonstrated that Psychology is indeed a scoring subject. Her stellar performance underscores the significance of choosing Psychology as an optional. It reflects the strategic advantage that a well-prepared candidate can gain by opting for this subject.
T. Bhuvanesh Ram - CSE 2023, Rank 41: Elevating the Prestige of Psychology
In CSE 2023, T. Bhuvanesh Ram scored an impressive 293 marks. His achievement further solidifies the perception that Psychology is not only a rewarding optional but also one that can significantly boost one's rank in the highly competitive UPSC exam.

Q. Give a comparative analysis of the + and - symptoms of schizoprenia. 10, UPSC-CSE, Psychology Optional |
Model Answer:
Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder characterized by a range of symptoms that can be broadly categorized into positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms involve the presence of abnormal behaviours, thoughts, and perceptions, while negative symptoms reflect deficits or disruptions in normal functioning.
Positive Symptoms:
• Hallucinations: Individuals may experience false sensory perceptions, such as hearing voices or seeing things that are not present.
• Delusions: Persistent false beliefs that are resistant to reasoning or contrary evidence.
• Disorganized Thinking: Impaired thought processes, leading to fragmented or incoherent speech and difficulty organizing thoughts.
Negative Symptoms:
• Affective Flattening: Reduced emotional expression, including facial expressions, gestures, and vocal tone.
• Anhedonia: Diminished ability to experience pleasure or interest in activities that were once enjoyable.
• Avolition: Decreased motivation and initiative to engage in purposeful activities.
• Social Withdrawal: Impaired social functioning and reduced interest in relationships with others.
It is essential to note that these symptoms can vary in severity and presentation among individuals with schizophrenia. Positive symptoms often respond well to antipsychotic medications, while negative symptoms tend to be more chronic and challenging to treat.
Understanding the interplay between positive and negative symptoms is crucial for developing comprehensive treatment plans. Combining medication, psychotherapy, and social support can enhance the overall management of schizophrenia.

Psychology optional is not scoring in UPSC-IAS Exam ?
You can investigate this question in one of the two ways:
1) listen to what other students say about this, what are their perceptions about the different optional subjects ; or
2) you can look for data, analyse them and then make logical conclusion.
When students ask me this question i subscribe to the second way to explore the answer. Last year in CSE 2022, four students of Beautiful Mind appeared in the mains examination and three of them got through. And the marks scored by them were 295, 279 & 278 respectively.
Satistically, one can easily calculate success rate and marks percentage. With the same level of knowledge, one could score 300+ too as descriptive subjects show some variation in the marks. Our students , Joseph ,Venkata K Varri , Anuj Malik scored 311, 318, 306 respectively with the same level of knowledge in the previous years.
In conclusion, listen to your own wisdom while making decision.

Mental toughness required to fight in a competitive situation largely depends upon the cause you are fighting for. More deeply you identify with the cause, more deadly you become for your competitors. So, think of your own reasons for fighting, you will feel enormous energy from within to fight and conquer the situation.
