Abstract
The disputed India-China boundary has over the decades featured in the news when “incursions/intrusions” by the two sides (and, as in 2020, actual clashes), take place. This is chiefly due to the unsettled nature of the border and the different perceptions of the Line of Actual Control in the western and eastern sectors of the border. As has been repeatedly stated in the Indian Parliament, differences arise when both sides come up to what they perceive as their rightful, legal boundary line, which constitutes a violation of that perception. For nearly a decade now, the PRC has been publicising the “Chinese names” of the villages, on and along the Arunachal Pradesh border, which they refer to as “Southern Tibet” or ‘Zangnan’. These have been routinely objected to by the Indian government. Both sides unequivocally reject the other’s claim to this territory. On 7 August 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Indian Government formally identified 27 places and geographical features (including mountain passes and a lake) in Arunachal Pradesh by their standard names, on the official Indian map, brought out by the Survey of India. This was done, reportedly, “to facilitate accurate recognition, eliminate ambiguity in geographical references and create a uniform reference framework for official maps and government records.” Is there any significance about the timing of this announcement and the locations that have been specified? How can we interpret the official Chinese response, which is a fairly standard rejection of this development, and what will be the nature of their stance going forward? How will this unambiguous tit for tat move, arguably for the first time by India, affect the nature of the ongoing boundary negotiations? The conference featured a wide range of scholarly presentations and discussions addressing contemporary developments in geopolitics, international relations, regional security, economic and strategic affairs, technology, connectivity, diplomacy, and changing patterns of regional and global engagement. Abstract
In 2015, Liu Cixin became the first Asian writer to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel, propelling The Three-Body Problem — serialized in Science Fiction World in 2006 — into a global literary phenomenon. This presentation argues that the novel cannot be adequately understood apart from the socio-political and cultural forces that shaped its author: the trauma of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), which Liu Cixin experienced as a child; the Reform and Opening Up era from 1978, which created the institutional conditions for Chinese science fiction's revival; and his own career as an engineer at the Niangziguan Power Plant in Shanxi. Employing a Marxist literary-theory framework and a comparative reading of the original Chinese text alongside Ken Liu's English translation — a methodological gap in existing Western scholarship — this study situates Liu Cixin within a century-long tradition of Chinese science fiction stretching from Liang Qichao's 1902 reformist fiction to the post-1991 "New Wave." Close analysis of the trilogy traces how Ye Wenjie's transmission to an alien civilization originates in Cultural Revolution violence, and how the novel's "Dark Forest" hypothesis restages Hobbesian and Waltzian realist logic at cosmic scale — before showing, through its resolution, what that logic cannot explain: a Confucian ethics of particular relationship and generational responsibility. The presentation further examines the trilogy's domestic and international reception, its function within Chinese cultural soft power, and the contested 2023 Tencent and 2024 Netflix adaptations. It concludes that The Three-Body Problem marks a qualitative transformation in Chinese science fiction's global standing — the point at which a historically suppressed and periodically revived national tradition produced a work of genuinely universal literary and philosophical power.
