There is something deeply interesting about moving from designing façades to sitting on the other side of the table and evaluating them.

Recently, I had the privilege of being part of the 𝗝𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 for the SHE Design Competition at WADE ASIA Conference & Awards 2026, judging the 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 category alongside some prominent professionals from the industry.

What began with multiple projects across two rounds of shortlisting eventually culminated in a 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝗿𝘆, where nine shortlisted projects were presented by the organisations and women designers behind them.

And the conversations went far beyond “Does this façade look good?”

We discussed 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁, 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, constructability, performance and innovation — because a fascinating façade must ultimately do much more than create a striking first impression.

For me, this experience was particularly meaningful because façades sit at the heart of much of what we do at rat[LAB] Studio. We constantly explore how the building envelope can move beyond being a skin to become an 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 — responsive, contextual, intelligent and memorable.

Being on a jury is therefore not simply about being on this side of the table or that side of it. It is an opportunity to understand where the profession is heading, exchange perspectives with fellow practitioners, learn from the work being produced across the country, and hopefully contribute to raising the conversation around façade design.

And perhaps that is where the larger opportunity lies — 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

For us at rat[LAB], freedom has always meant the ability to 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, experiment with new ideas and build things that perhaps did not exist before.

From 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 and computationally designed façades to digitally fabricated art installations, our journey has been about bringing together 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 × 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 × 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 across different scales.

But increasingly, it is also about 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁.

Through rat[LAB]EDUCATION and our new EdTech venture, EDU[LAB]INDIA, we are exploring how years of knowledge, experimentation and practice can translate into new models of learning — making computational design and emerging technologies more accessible to the next generation of designers.

Because perhaps 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲.

As 𝗿𝗮𝘁[𝗟𝗔𝗕] has evolved over the years, so has the space we call home.

What began as a single-level studio has now grown into a vertically connected ecosystem spanning four levels—each floor thoughtfully dedicated to a different facet of who we are and what we do.

This isn’t simply an expansion in space.

It’s an evolution of our ideas, our culture, and the way we imagine, collaborate, create, teach, exhibit, and build.

Every level has been intentionally designed to support a different part of our journey.

💥Bungalow Forty Five explores the balance between openness, privacy, and natural light through a carefully layered architectural approach.

Rather than relying on solid boundaries, the design uses screens, openings, and transitional spaces to filter views, daylight, and movement throughout the home.

☀️As sunlight shifts across the day, the architecture transforms with it - creating dynamic spatial experiences shaped by light and shadow.

The result is a residence that feels connected to its surroundings while maintaining a sense of comfort, privacy, and calm.

rat[LAB] Co-founder Sushant Verma was recently invited to be a part of a prestigious panel discussion at Bharat Buildcon in Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.

One of the key discussions took place around AI and its evolution in the design sphere.

When tools become accessible to everyone, the real differentiator becomes thinking. Critical judgment. Creativity. Spatial intelligence. The ability to ask better questions and make better decisions.

“AI won’t eliminate designers
It will challenge them to evolve”
