Students skipping Xth board exam do better in class XII, CBSE report says
NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education on Monday released a report on five years of working of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) which shows that students who skipped class X board examination did marginally better in class XII examination.
CCE made taking class X board examination optional. The first batch to miss out on the class X board exams was in 2011. By 2013 the pass percentage recorded a high of 98.76% which was miles ahead of 88.94% in 2009 when CCE was not introduced. Impact of making class X examination optional could be seen in class XII also. In 2012-13, 6.82 lakh students appeared for class XII examination. Among them, the percentage of students who had appeared in the school exam in class X were 64.93% and those who opted for Board examination were 35.07%. In class XII, 18.52% students scored more than 80%. The corresponding figure for students who appeared for board and school examination in class X were 17.4% and 19.44% respectively.
CBSE's analysis of class XII results shows that students who skipped the Board's class X exam have done better, both in terms of high marks and mean marks. CBSE took 100 samples of 30,000 students across India who took board exams in class X in 2011 and similar sample of those who took school based assessment.
CBSE report also says that the percentage of students who got more than 80% in class XII was 52.46 among students who scored more than 80% in class X. It shows 55.62% of students who got 80% in school's internal exam in class X maintained their results in class XII as compared 47.48% of those who took the board exam in class X.
why children and teens need tutors:
Parents may want their children to have some good “reading readiness” skills before their child starts school. They may also want to get some advice for themselves on how they can prepare their child for the challenges of school – academic, social, and more.
Students may be doing well in school generally, but have one subject area that they struggle with.
Students may be struggling with almost all school subjects, and need some one-on-one help to improve their study skills, catch up in areas in which they are behind, and become more motivated to learn.
The classroom environment is overwhelming for some children. They thrive better in a quiet, focused, one-on-one situation.
Tutors, in working with a child one-on-one, are often able to analyze learning needs and provide individualized solutions that may be difficult for the busy classroom teacher or parents to provide.
Some children have physical or mental health issues which result in them missing a lot of school, or not being able to focus well in the classroom
Some students are getting behind in school because they are distracted by home issues, loss, or other problems
Students have special needs that the classroom teacher does not have sufficient time to meet in the school room situation
Some students are terrified of tests and exams. These may be anything from “pop quizzes,” to unit tests, mid-terms, final exams, and even province (or state/country) wide exams that are used to determine learning success across the region. A tutor can help a student with the necessary skills for test-taking, and give encouragement and motivation.
Some students with various kinds of special needs are allowed to have a helper come with them for exams, to read questions to the student, write answers the student dictates, etc. A tutor who has been helping a student and understands the student’s special needs can be the ideal helper in these situations (if the school agrees).
Gifted students need extra challenge beyond the usual classroom curriculum; or even need a tutor to teach them subject matter at a higher level than their class or school offers
Frustrations between teachers and students that are holding back learning
Students have had difficulty during the school year, and would benefit more from one-on-one tutoring in the summer than from regular summer school classes, in order to be ready for the next school year
Children may have strong interest in, or show talent for, areas which are not adequately covered in the school system. This could include music, sports, dance, art, particular areas of science, hobbies, and so on.
Students who have not completed grade 12, or those who have but wish to go to American or international colleges, may need help preparing for PSAT, SAT, subject-specific SATs, or GED.
Some parents may feel under pressure to provide homework answers or do projects for their children, or simply doesn’t know the subject matter. A tutor is trained to help students learn, and to guide them to find their own answers and complete their own projects on homework assignments.
Parent work hours and responsibilities may make it difficult to meet with the child’s teacher on a regular basis, or the parents may not understand the teacher’s instructions. Tutors, as trained educators themselves, are qualified and happy to work together with the child’s teacher and other education-related professionals to provide the exact type of help that is needed. They will be able to focus on the child’s assignments in the context in which they have been assigned.
A child may have learning styles that are not often met in the classroom situation. A tutor can determine and use those particular styles to help the individual child learn more easily and efficiently.
A student may move from one school to another, or even from one district or province (or state) to another. Schools often do differ quite a lot, even within the same city or district, and a student may find themselves ahead or behind, or even facing courses they did not take at their previous school. A tutor can help with the transition.
Parents may wish to send their children to a school that emphasizes special programs such as strong academics, sports, fine arts, or technical programs, but may be concerned that their child may lack some of the basics needed for entrance to the school.
Students moving upwards from elementary to middle school, from middle school to high school, or from high school to college, are going to face new challenges in many areas – academic challenges, social expectations, different classroom sizes and environments, different scheduling systems, and more. A tutor can often help prepare a student for the change through making sure the learner has the basic knowledge and skills required for new courses; checking out the particular school and preparing the child for the new situation; and so on.
Many colleges and universities now require the prospective students to take entrance examinations, in addition to requiring their school credits, possibly SAT scores, and other information. A tutor can help the student study and prepare for the entrance examinations, and may also help the student prepare a portfolio or other entrance requirements. Schools do generally provide this help, but a student may have specialized requirements, or may later change his or her mind about what higher education course or institution to attend, or requirements may even change.
Does your child face any of these situations? If so, you would do well to find a tutor who is qualified to help with your child’s particular needs. Coming up soon, we will discuss how to choose the best tutor for your child.
Meanwhile, in the rest of this series on “Why do you need a tutor?” we will look at reasons why college and university students, adults in general, and home school students also need tutors, and the different kinds of tutors available. Keep tuned!
Five Steps to Being an Effective Tutor
Step One: Know what is Expected of You as a Tutor
Tutoring is the process of getting students to become independent through questioning. Tutoring should help students develop self-confidence and improve study skills. In addition, the tutoring session should provide students with an opportunity to speak up and ask questions, an opportunity sometimes unavailable or missed in a regular classroom situation.
Tutoring is a well-balanced question/information exchange in which both parties participate and, therefore, both benefit. Tutoring provides the practice and drill in specific course material needed by the student, while giving the tutor valuable review opportunities and the chance to develop and sharpen educational and communication skills.
Tutoring is not teaching. There are important differences between the role of the tutor and that of the classroom teacher. Approaches, relationships, and techniques are different. The tutor works in very close proximity with the student, usually one-on-one. The student may not be accustomed to the close contact and the interchange that occurs during a tutoring session. The tutor may have to consciously strive to develop a good rapport with the student within this environment.
Step Two: Setting Up the Tutoring Session
It is important to shape the tutoring environment. This can be difficult in the busy LRC; however, if you follow these simple procedures, you will have a successful session.
Prepare yourself for the tutoring session
Prepare a greeting and review expectations
Be prepared for potential problems
Step Three: Meeting Your Student's Needs
Assess the student’s understanding of the subject by asking questions. Determine the student’s need for them to succeed in the subject. Strategies will vary, but do remember to engage the student. Try not to lecture and attempt to use:
Use good questioning techniques
Positive ways of correcting students
Positive problem solving
Step Four: The Ingredients of a Good Tutoring Session
The following are some of the necessary ingredients for a good session:
Greet your Student and give them your undivided attention
Have empathy with your Student's problems
Be honest with your client
Set the Agenda
Have a sense of humor
Have the ability to "lighten up" a situation
Have a good interaction with your Student, a good give-and-take
Know your Student's strengths and weaknesses
Work through your Student's strengths to improve his/her weaknesses
Make your Student feel good about him/herself and his/her accomplishments
Know when to stop a session
End the session on a positive note
Step Five: Ending the Tutoring Session
Do not just say "good-bye" when the session is over. You should:
Positively assess the work that was done during the session
Re-schedule for another session if necessary
Do any necessary tutor paperwork
Always end the session with a positive comment

Top 10 Benefits of Private Tutoring for Children
There are many benefits to private tutoring. Besides the obvious better grades at school example, we'll list here our top 10 reasons to find your child a private tutor:
Fewer distractions. In a classroom setting, noise and other interruptions from peer groups can hugely affect your child's performance. This is especially true if your child suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. Private one-on-one tutoring is a much more controllable environment, and therefore far less susceptible to interference.
Choose your tutor. You can choose a tutor that has a style or personality that suits your child, and if it's not working you can book another one.
Focus on specific areas. A private tutor is able to focus on specific areas that your child may be having problems with. A school teacher will only be able to give limited private attention to students as they are constrained by time and tough targets for subject coverage.
Confidence and self-esteem. These are extremely important factors to learning any subject. The more confident a child feels with their schoolwork the more creative their thought processes become which means they will be able to grasp complicated concepts much more easily.
Enthusiasm. If you are using a specialised tutor say for maths tutoring, they are likely to have a passion for their subject. This can be infectious for your child who may pick up the interest and fascination for the subject that the tutor has.
Catch-up. Sometimes your child may have missed key points in the syllabus that are now holding them back from understanding the more advanced concepts. A private tutor will quickly be able to identify areas that need work and bring your child up to speed. This is especially important if your child has been ill and missed a few lessons.
Shy children can ask questions. A lot of children may be too shy to ask questions in class and may then miss out on key points in their subjects. Like a large rock in a fast flowing river this can have repercussions for a long time afterwards. They are much more likely to ask questions in a one-on-one environment with their tutor.
Coverage. A private tutor is able to cover a lot of detail in a short time. They can work at your child's pace and become very familiar with your child's capacity for learning and the methods that work best with your child when explaining sometimes advanced concepts to them. Every child is different and a good tutor should be able to identify and adapt to the individual needs and capabilities of the student.
Help with homework. If your child is struggling with homework the tutor can help! Sometimes they may be asking questions of mum or dad that you just can't answer. Sometimes at the end of a long day in the office you don't want to come home from work to 2 hours of homework help! A private tutor can provide the answers your child needs and the tools your child can use to find the answers themselves.
Handling attention span. Your child may only be able to concentrate for 10 minutes before their mind starts wandering onto other things. This is completely normal and almost completely overlooked in the public schooling system. A private tutor will easily be able to recognise when your child's attention span is wavering. A minute or two discussing something else or having a biscuit or a glass of water will reset the clock to an extent and your child will be able to get back on track quickly.
Now, tutors make a home run in Chennai
They come right to your doorstep, work odd hours, and are even willing to stay over to do that extra revision. With an increasing number of children depending on extra coaching classes, home tutors in the city are doing brisk business, especially with exams just round the corner.
When Uma Saravanan felt her son needed help with his studies, she did not opt for a tuition centre. Instead, she hired a home tutor who would give her son individual attention.
"Tuition centres are usually crowded and I don't want my son to be distracted," says Uma. "His tutor comes daily, teaches him all the subjects and even works longer hours with him during exam time."
Naveen Kumar, for instance, who coaches Uma's son S Jayaraj Ritik, a class IX student, says he works with him till late into the night during the annual exams. "I even stayed over at a student's place before an exam so that I could coach him longer. I went at 6.30pm and we studied till 1am, after which we slept for a few hours and were up by 5.30am to revise some more," says 24-year-old Kumar.
During the exams, he acts like a parent to his students. "We understand the child's needs and have to keep encouraging and motivating them so that they don't lose confidence," he says.
Many of these tutors are willing to travel far, work odd hours, and even sleep over at the student's place. "A colleague of mine has a student in Thirukazhukundram. He goes by 4pm and returns only by seven the next morning as there are barely 40 to 50 days left before exams," says N C Karthikeyan, who runs Karthik Institute, a tuition centre in Chennai, and also provides home tutors in Chennai, Thanjavur and Madurai. He has 500 tutors -- including software engineers and qualified teachers -- registered with him so far.
Many parents are opting to have tutors come home as it is more convenient. "I don't have to shuttle my son to and fro in traffic, so it saves time and fuel. Also, my child gets individual attention. So I don't mind shelling out more," says businessman Vipin Agarwal. Tutors also come home at timings suited to the parent and child. "In my childhood, we had tutors coming home, then tuition centres came up and now home tutors are back in demand," he says.
To cater to the increasing demand, consultancies have mushroomed across the country, connecting students and parents to tutors. "There is a demand for home tutors for all subjects, right from class 1 onwards," says Karthikeyan.
Usually, most of them have an online presence and people can register online and post their requirements. "We will quote the price and if the client agrees, we will recommend a tutor and arrange for a demo class. They can then give feedback and confirm the tutor," says Abhinav Charan, who runs the Bangalore-based consultancy svshometuition.in. "Otherwise, they can post their requirements on our site and since tutors as well as institutes are registered with us, they can connect with each other directly."
Agencies do try to verify the qualifications of the tutor. 'We have a variety of tutors who can handle every level — from kindergarten to PhD. They submit their profile and while do we cross-check, we also ask parents to verify their qualifications," says Rahul Kumar, proprietor of hometutors.in, a Delhi-based consultancy, which provides tutors across India. So far, they have more than 20,000 tutors working with them.
The money each tutor is paid varies according to the qualification. "A CBSE school teacher charges Rs 500 per hour, while a software engineer is paid Rs 400 to Rs 500. College students who teach get about Rs 350," says Karthikeyan.
Some tutors do it for the love of teaching as well as earning an extra buck. "Teaching is my passion," says Kumar, who works as a graphic design engineer in a private firm. "Going over the lessons makes the subject clearer to me as well."
How Do You know If Your Child Needs a Home Tutor?
There are many reasons that parents choose to hire a tutor for their children. Some of the signs that your
child may need extra support can include:
*Struggling with homework exercises
*Concerned feedback from class teachers
*A drop in assessment results
*General concern from your child regarding his/her studies
On the other hand, you may want to consider hiring a tutor for your child in order to:
*Increase confidence in a subject
*Supplement classroom teaching
*Ensure the best results for university places
Whatever the reason for deciding to use a tutor, it’s important to discuss the reasons with your child. If a student is
happy to use the services of a tutor and thinks it will make a difference, there is a higher likelihood that the tuition
will be effective.
Why do Parents Hire Home Tutors?
Personal tuition is a great way to improve a student’s grades. Whether a student is passing with flying colours or needs
a little extra help with his/her studies, an appropriately qualified tutor can make all the difference in helping a
student achieve his/her goals.
Whereas home tuition used to be considered somewhat of a luxury, demand for the service has ensured that prices are now
competitively affordable. Tutoring prices vary, dependant on a tutor’s experience and qualifications, but generally, in
Nigeria, tutors tend to charge between #3,000 - #6,000 per hour dependant on subject and location.
Using the services of a tutor can often give students a much needed confidence boost. Due to the ‘one on one’ nature of
home tuition, tutors can quickly identify which areas a student may need improvement in – something that students may not
be able to identify on their own. Sometimes all it takes to instill a little confidence in a student is to have a tutor
identify what they are doing correctly and suggest how they may improve in the areas they are falling short in.
With a typical Nigerian class sizes (ranging from 15 to 70 pupils in a classroom) at their largest of recent years, it’s
said that teachers often do not have as much time to spend with students on an individual basis. With a tutor, a student
has maximum guarantee of full attention. This attention can prove invaluable as it not only assures that a student is
covering the relevant course work, but it also makes certain that their approach to course work is correct.
Who Uses Private Home Tutors?
Commonly, tutors are used by students of high school age to help with their studies and to aid their understanding of exam
techniques. However, parents often hire tutors for their children at a younger age, especially in areas where the 'eleven
plus' examination is used.
There’s also much demand from international students to improve their English skills and a lot of tutors teach English as
a foreign language. Many adults use the services of a personal tutor to aid them in their own studies and private
businesses often employ tutors to aid employees in more specialist subjects such as accounting or law. Those studying
music academically or leisurely also use tutors to improve their skill level.
