The Linguistic Empowerment Cell, JNU conducts courses in Basic Communication Skills and English for
The LEC was created to cater to the needs of those students who wanted to excel, but were held back by a lack of language skills and confidence that springs from the presence of the same. The aim and purpose of this Cell, now located in the Old Language Lab Complex, is linguistic empowerment, which I firmly believe will not only enhance the communication abilities of the students, but also help in
honing their cognitive processing and learning skills as a whole. Linguistic empowerment is cognitive empowerment, and cognitive capacity building, so that eventually; the students learn to realize the creative potential of the language, learn to express some of the most complex and abstract ideas in simple language, and also realize how learning a language becomes cognitive empowerment. Since we introduced these English Language courses last year, we have had a great response from the students. As indicated in the last section of this brochure, 116 students registered last year, 260 students have registered this year already and we have more than 50 requests for diagnostic test pending with us. In addition to the students' programs we also conducted programs for the staff and the overwhelming response that we got shows how much is the perceived need of these programs in academics and in administration in an academic institution.
