The conversation often begins with curricula, textbooks and languages. But the deeper question is about how we understand knowledge itself.

This post explores as a response to an article from Panchjanya about how colonial patterns of education can gradually distance us from our own intellectual traditions and argues for a renewed engagement with Indian systems of knowledge.

Importantly, this is not presented as a choice between Indian and modern knowledge, or between tradition and progress. The larger proposition is one of recovery, critical inquiry and dialogue: bringing Indian intellectual traditions back into serious academic conversation with contemporary disciplines and the wider world. Learning Across Cultures, Connecting Through Education!

Muni International School welcomed 14 educators and education coordinators from Japan for a programme focused on exploring and learning from the best and holistic teaching and learning practices at Muni International School. The visit also offered an opportunity to experience India’s rich cultural diversity through Gyaan Mela, where our students showcased regional traditions and identities through traditional identities and cultural knowledge.

From sharing educational practices to experiencing each other’s cultures, the visit created a meaningful space for learning, exchange and collaboration between educators from India and Japan.

'GYAAN MELA: Celebrating India Through Its Diversity'

Gyaan Mela is an immersive learning experience that nurtures cultural identity and literacy by introducing the rich ethnic and regional diversity of India for building the holistic learning space.

Dressed in traditional attire representing different Indian states, students of Muni International School come together to share, explore and represent regional traditions, cultural identities and knowledge. Through this experience, they learn not only about India’s diverse cultures, but also to approach that diversity with understanding, respect and appreciation.

In the Muni Education Model, the child moves to the centre of the learning process. Students take active responsibility for their learning, behaviour, and leadership, while the teacher’s role shifts towards designing learning situations, facilitating discussions, providing support, monitoring peer groups, and guiding student leadership.

This shift is supported by five interlocking mechanisms: Buddy Support, Peer Teaching, GRS, “Am I Able” Self-Assessment, and the Parliament System. In this continuation of The Facilitator’s Classroom, we explore how these mechanisms distribute responsibility within the classroom and redefine the everyday role of the teacher.
