Gender equality is essential for the achievement of human rights for all. Yet discriminatory laws against women persist in every corner of the globe and new discriminatory laws are enacted. In all legal traditions many laws continue to institutionalize second class status for women and girls with regard to nationality and citizenship, health, education, marital rights, employment rights, parental rights, inheritance and property rights. The committee must realizing equality between women and men through ensuring women's equal access to, and equal opportunities in, political and public life -- including the right to vote and to stand for election -- as well as education, health and employment. With special focus on Developing societies, the committee must further the struggle against discrimination against women at home and in the workplace.

Enforcing primary education will speed progress toward every other Millennium Goal. Educating children helps reduce poverty and promote gender equality. It helps lower child mortality rates and promote concern for the environment. It is inextricably linked to gender parity – as universal primary education by definition requires gender parity. Gender parity in primary education, meanwhile, is of limited worth if few children of either s*x participate. Further, education – specifically free primary school for all children – is a fundamental right to which governments committed themselves under the 1989 Convention of the Rights of the Child.

Human Rights Council (High School) - For over six-decades now, Tibetans in Tibet are continuously resisting China’s violent rule; now they are lighting their own bodies on fire as a cry to the world to help restore their fundamental rights as human beings. As the body responsible for monitoring human rights violations around the world, the UNHRC has an obligation to the people of Tibet. Delegates must stand on the right side of history and take principled, decisive diplomatic action to address the Tibet crisis.

Security Council (High School) - The United Nations Security Council al Qaeda Sanctions Committee has on Thursday blacklisted Islamist group Boko Haram after the insurgents kidnapped nearly 300 girls from a Chibok secondary school. Boko Haram has been added to the U.N.’s 1267 (al Qaeda) sanctions list by the Security Council, this has helped to close off important avenues of funding, travel and weapons to Boko Haram, and shown global unity against their savage actions. Deeply concerned at the alarming scale of the humanitarian crisis caused by the activities of Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin region, the United Nations Security Council demanded that the group “immediately and unequivocally cease all violence and all abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law.” As a part of the Security Council, delegates must underscore the importance of a holistic approach to degrade and defeat Boko Haram that includes coordinated security operations, conducted in accordance with applicable international law, as well as enhanced civilian efforts to improve governance and promote economic growth in the affected areas.

Historic Security Council (High School) - The Republic of Cyprus became an independent state on 16 August 1960, and a member of the United Nations one month later. The Constitution of the Republic, which came into effect on the day of independence, was intended to balance the interests of both the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities. Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom entered into a treaty to guarantee the basic provisions of the Constitution and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Cyprus. The application of the provisions of the Constitution, however, encountered difficulties from the very beginning and led to a succession of constitutional crises. The accumulated tension between the two communities resulted in the outbreak of violence on the island on 21 December 1963. On 27 December, the Security Council met to consider a complaint by Cyprus charging intervention in its internal affairs and aggression by Turkey. Turkey maintained that Greek Cypriot leaders had tried for more than two years to nullify the rights of the Turkish Cypriot community and denied all charges of aggression.
In the context of the confrontation between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities in 1964, delegates have a chance to re-write history. The committee must work towards preserving international peace and security, to use its best efforts to prevent a recurrence of fighting and, as necessary, to contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order in Cyprus, and a return to normal conditions."
