WHAT IS MACHINE LEARNING?

Almost everyone around nowadays is excited to get their hands-on and explore the trending new tech in the developers’ community, “Machine Learning” and “Artificial Intelligence”. In response to this, it is indeed a true statement that the ones interested in this field are working hard to learn and create something new to utilize its full potential. Naturally, for beginners, the question that comes to mind is, “What exactly is Machine Learning?”.
Machine Learning in simple words:
Machine Learning is a field of Computer Science that aims at predicting the next event from the experience of current and past events. Some might be wondering how? It can be done using the elements of Mathematics (specifically Statistics). There are certain Algorithms of Machine Learning, for e.g. Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines, Naive Bayes, etc. that can be used to do amazing tasks. These Algorithms have existed since a long time but this technology has gained popularity in the recent years due to an obvious fact that in the previous times, we did not own adequate compute capability that is available in the present scenario.
Working Rule of ML:
Machine Learning has a definite structure of data flow. In a nutshell, an input is considered that is basically past experiences of any event and the output is given, which are the predictions. For instance, if the past experiences (or input) include that the robot crashes with a wall when it moves in the right and left direction, then the prediction (or output) given by the ML model would be that the robot should move in the forward direction.
Applications of Machine Learning:
Talking about the Applications of Machine Learning, there is a vast array of use cases of ML. Some of them include:
1. ML can be used for Text Recognition, Image Recognition and Gesture Recognition.
2. Music is also one of the fields in which ML and DL (Deep Learning) is being used to let the computer now generate EDMs.
3. ML can also be used in Computers for smart Load Balancing, Database Management and improving User Experience.
4. Healthcare Industry is using ML to predict various diseases before it gets to a serious stage.
Conclusion:
Machine Learning is a very fascinating and unique field to experiment with. All that one needs to get started with ML is the knowledge of basic coding in Python and Java, familiarity with Python libraries like NumPy, Matplotlib and Pandas, and understanding of maths, specifically statistics, linear algebra, probability and calculus.

Smart Energy Meter

Ever thought of a device that eliminates the estimation of bills but rather, shows exactly how much energy is being used by you which is reflected in your bills? Well, here it is. The Smart Energy Meter.
A smart meter, as the name suggests, is a smart meter that comes with an in-home display screen that measures the exact energy consumption of a person, also taking in account the day to day expenses. The energy usage is depicted in pounds and pence which makes it a sustainable and accurate alternative to simple meters.
This smart device has several advantages when compared to a simple meter. Some of them are listed as follows:
• Eliminates manual meter reading
• Reduces cost
• Transparency in the system
• Enables dynamic pricing
• Helps optimization
• Provides real-time data
The main functional features of a Smart Energy Meter are:
1. Reading the voltage, current and the difference between the voltage and current waveforms.
2. It uses GSM to transfer the information to the utility and customers’ phone.
3. Automatic switching of home appliances for saving energy.
Smart Grids
The extended form of analog technology is the Smart Grid Technology. This technology has been introduced to control the use of appliances by employing two-way communication that is completely reliant on the Internet for transmitting the information which makes it more functional and practical. Its main features include:
• Load Handling:
In case of heavy load, a smart grid device can advise the consumer to temporarily minimize energy consumption.

• Demand Response Support: Provides users with an automated way to reduce their electricity bills by guiding them to use low-priority electronic devices when rates are lower.
• Decentralization of Power Generation: A distributed or decentralized grid system allows the individual user to generate onsite power by employing any appropriate method at his or her own discretion.
How to integrate smart grids with smart energy metering
In order to realise the smart grid, an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is required that is well-based on smart meters. The implementation of AMI is observed in the digitalization of the electric grid control systems. The AMI system collects and analyses the data retrieved from the smart meters using two-way communication and giving intelligent management to the electric meter. The AMI is the architecture for automated two‐way communications between smart utility meters and utility companies.
The AMI includes smart meters, e.g., electric, gas, and heat meters; at customer premises, access points, communication backbone network between customer and service providers, and data management systems to measure, collect, manage, and analyse the data for further processing. The smart meter can identify power consumption in much more detail than a conventional meter and periodically sends the collected information back to the utility company for load monitoring and billing purposes. Besides, the data received from smart meter readings is critical for the control centre to implement Demand/Response mechanism. By using smart meters, customers can control their power consumption and manage how much power they are using, particularly managing the peak load. Hence, through customer participation, the utility companies can likely provide electricity at lower and even rates for all their customers and the consequent carbon dioxide emission will also decrease.

Women in Machine Learning

Here's an interesting scenario: When we first read the word "tech", we imagine nerdy men sitting on their coding desks. How many of us pictured a woman instead? But this scenario is changing at a fast rate.
Women have indelibly changed the tech world which ranges from coding to robotics as well as from neurological nano-technologies to astronomical space technologies. Women have stepped into a revolutionary era and have proved their mettle, not only as great tech minds but as tech leaders and CEOs of tech giants like YouTube, IBM, Yahoo, and Facebook too!
Researches and algorithm deductions have seen an exponential increment in women involvement and contributions.
Indian women in tech have inspired a lot of young females to step into this world.
Debjani Ghosh, first woman President of NASSCOM; Roshni Nadar, CEO of HCL Corporation and many more have become role models for women in India.
Many platforms like Codechef, HackerRank, TechGig, SheCodes, WomenWhoCode have seen competitive participation by women and similarly, the field of Machine Learning is no exception.
Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence have been growing at a rapid pace in recent years. Women have shown active participation in these fields and have also worked hard to take it to the next level. Some of the names include: Seema Gaur, Executive VP & Head IT, IFFCO Tokio General Insurance Company, Kyoka Nakagawa, Chief Engineer, Value Creation Department, Digital Transformation Division, Digital Solution Center, Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Japan, Harmeen Mehta, Chief Information Officer & Head Cloud and Security Business, Bharti Airtel and Jennifer Edgin, CTO, Deputy Commandant Information, U.S.
In this fast-evolving tech world, women have started to fill the gender gap and are already breaking stereotypes, which lets us imagine the day when women will rule the tech industry too!
And that day is not far!

We women have come so far in terms of right and equality so why not just own it and each of us become the strong independent woman that we all are and show the world our capabilities and uniqueness.
Many women have already proved themselves by enduring criticism posed by this world.
One such example is Kumud Srinivasan.
She is Vice President and Director of Non-Volatile Memory Fab Manufacturing and Automation Systems at Intel Corporation. She served as Site General Manager of Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd. until March 30, 2016. She has spent 30 years at Intel in US, leading multiple global functions, prominent ones being R&D for technology manufacturing, industrial automation and Internet of Things for manufacturing facilities. From 2012 to 2016, she served as President for Intel India. She has been Non-Executive and Independent Director of Sterlite Technologies Ltd since May 22, 2018. Information Studies, Syracuse She is very strong leader in technology with valuable experience in the US, China and India. What is the meaning of being a woman? Other than the fact that god gifted us organs that set us apart from men, in today’s world after years of oppression, fighting for our right to vote, fighting for our right to be doctors and engineers, I feel that now it means so much more. It means if we fight the mental and social barriers that society holds us in then we are a source of bright, beautiful light that can shine and make this world a better place.
Take example of Meenakshi Chatterjee, who is a senior hardware engineer at Twitter and has been listed as one of the 25 Most Powerful Women in tech. Or Selina Tobaccowala, who is an entrepreneur and software product executive. She joined SurveyMonkey as Vice President of Product and Engineering. Engineers everywhere thank her for SurveyMonkey!
No, they didn’t achieve all this by coming home at exact six because they didn’t want the neighbour aunty to make stories about them. They didn’t achieve all this thinking that they should be married in their early twenties and have children as soon as possible. They would/will do these things because they want to not because they have to.
Being a woman no longer means responsibilities to our society, it means do whatever you want and shine at it! Because you can and you will. Just dare to dream and work towards it without losing hope.
“Empowered women, empower women.”
