Definition of "Document" provided in Indian Evidence Act 1872 is similar to one defined in Indian Penal Code 1860.
Document - any substance having any matters expressed or described upon it by marks capable of being read, for example letters imprinted on trees as evidence that they have been passed by Forest Ranger are documents.

The Indian Evidence Act, 1872 does not apply to 'affidavits' because affidavits are not included within the purview of the definition of "evidence" in section 3 and the same can be used as "evidence" only if for sufficient reasons, the court passes an order under Order 19 CPC; sections 295-297 CrPC.
